when I paint in layers as I can remove a portion of a single layer like an eraser in Photoshop?

2.5 D brush named Eraser will erase pixols from layers. Keep in mind once you’ve created a layer, you can’t edit in 3D anymore without redrawing the object.

You can do it using the Morph Brush:

  1. Turn off the layer and store a morph target (press Tool>Morph Target>StoreMT).
  2. Turn on the layer and turn on record mode.
  3. Using the Morph brush, erase the areas of the layer that you don’t want.
  4. Turn off record mode and delete the morph target.

This works well for sculpting but you may get unexpected results with polypaint.
