How does ZBrush look in 2560 x 1440? Thoughts?

Hello,

I am looking to get an IPS monitor for better colour depth and accuracy for my ZBrush work. Also will be doing some image/video editing and 3DS Max animation.

I am really interested in a 27" 2560 x 1440 display as my 1920 x 1080 TN just leaves me wanting more virtual space to move around in.

Does anyone have experience Zbrushing in ultra high res? Is it worth the expense or would I most likely get a headache from all the extra pixols?

Lastly, would the higher resolution affect my performance in ZB? I would think not as the graphics card should take care of this.

I have a decent card (GTX 580) with plenty of VRAM (3GB).

Thanks for any help!

For Zbrush forget entirely about the Graphics Card. Zbrush only uses the CPU.

Thanks for confirming, Polyxo.

Still my main question was more along the lines of will I see an advantage in Zbrushing with the massive resolution native to the Dell U2711?

What I meant in the original post was that while ZB does not use the GPU at all to process internally, the screen resolution and colour depth etc are still powered by the graphics card. Therefore there should be no performance hit moving around in
ZB @ 2560 x 1440 as, like I said, the GPU takes care of that side of things.

I just had to be sure, a monitor of this resolution and size is a significant investment so I gotta get it right.

Can’t contribute anything on that matter.
If I planned on spending lots of money for a Screen and had Sculpting in mind I personally would purchase the new 24 inch Cintiq.

i use a 30" apple monitor and i love zbrush on it… i think the res is higher than 2560 x 1440…

cheers

Cool, that’s all I needed to hear. I think I can settle for 1440p, big step up from 1080p which just isn’t enough anymore.

Thanks mate!

BTW: I have decided to probably go with the Samsung S27A850D, so I’ll report back with my impressions of it later this week.

I’m working with two Dell 27" at 2560x1440 resolution which is the same as 30" and everything is fine. Just keep in mind that by default it will create larger ZBrush documents then it can affect your performance if you have an old CPU or low performances.
BTW, no problems for me with and i7 920.

Take care, after switching to this resolution, it won’t become easy to switch to a lower resolution!

Hey Totyo,

The Dell IPS was high in my list also, but I decided to go with the new Samsung PLS tech. I picked up my S27A850D today and couldn’t be happier. Performance in ZB seems to be fine, but to tell the truth I havn’t done much work yet as I have been busy watching blurays in gorgeous colour!

You’re definately right though, I couldn’t go back to 1080p and 6 bit colour now that I’ve experienced this.

Now to find some 1440p wallpapers for my desktop…

Thanks guys.

I have a three monitor setup.
2x1920x1200
1x Cintiq UX 1600x1200
I connected an Intuos to test it with 3840x1200 on the two IPS.
Well it’s very impressive to look at.

After looking I switched back to my 1600x1200 Cintiq.
Resolution can never pay back that feeling.

Those old Cintiq are sold used for around 1000 Euros.
O.K. Double of an 27" - still not much more space if you use it as second monitor.

I can place my cintiq on an easel - cables are long enough - and work while standing, keyboard hooked where colours and brushes should be.

It’s simply a dream, just a dream. Photoshop, zBrush, sculptris, Flashanimations …a dream!

I was thinking ages, always saying it is too expensive.
It’s pretty soon paid back - that is my personal experience.

Just to get completely different input.

2550x1440 on 27"? Could end in very tiny text etc. which have to be scaled up again.
I am a little bit marked by my old 1920x1200 15,4 Laptop

Very nice setup, Knacki. I have never actually tried a Cintiq but it sounds awesome, like the missing link between traditional and digital art (or something). I think I’ll stick with my Intuos though, after experiencing 1440p I can’t imagine going back to lower res :stuck_out_tongue:

I was expecting text to be too small but to my surprise I found the whole screen alot clearer than my old 27" 1080p. I suppose it helps when you know where everything is already. Also, I only sit an average distance from my monitor so I think if I had a 30" it would bother me to be turning my head constantly to see the whole screen before me. I guess it comes down to preference.

Definately one of the best investments I have made, one of those things where you don’t know how you ever worked without it!

Thanks for your take on the subject.

Sorry, I over viewed that everything is already installed
I am 100% sure that this a beautiful monitor.

After having three 1600x1200 for a long time (including the cintiq) it is a wonderful feeling watching HD video only on one monitor now
