How can I keep hard-edged geo when subdividing?

Hello,

Im trying to model I concept I’ve painted, it’s a character combined with mechanical parts. The organic part is easy in zbrush but when it comes to it’s armor plating I get in trouble.

How can I keep the armor from getting subdivided along with the character? I use max a little bit now as well but Im new to modeling so I’ve got little experience with this sort of stuff.

Any ideas ?

you could try partial mesh subdivision
or creasing the edges of your armour…crease allows you to set the number of subd levels the edges stay hard and I believe the default is 15 so you could leave it at that.
