help...adding texture mapping made from another application

OK I’m going try to make this simple. I’m not good at explaining in words as well so please bare with me.

Ok basically I created a UV map from another program (Topogun) for my model which was done in zbrush. When I tried to bring the texture into zbrush, which is my high resolution model I got this massage “note: Texture mapping requires UV Mapping”

What can I do about this? I’m still new to this

Quick update. Ok so tried to create a UV by selecting the UVtile. I got the texture to work. But it looks like this now…

What happened here? As you can see the texture looks chopped up. What is causing this?

Thanks

If you generate the texture bitmap in a external program you can bring it to Zbrush as long you bring also the UVs that was used when the texture was generated. Both are dependent.

You can not reuse in Zbrush a texture bitmap using a UV generated in Zbrush after the texture was created as both texture bitmap and UVs won’t match. The UVs indicate where the texture will be place in the geometry and the texture bitmap is conformed to the UVs indications.

OK are you saying that when I export my model out of zbrush, I should already assign UV’s to the model before I export. I remember doing something like that before.

OK here’s what I’m doing. I’m creating new typology and map layout in the program 3D-COAT. Then I’m exporting that over to program TOPOGUN to bake the UV.s. I hope I’m saying that right.

thanks for the response

You simply need to create the texture bitmap based in a specific UV and then keep both together with the mesh. If any of them are done in Zbrush or not is not relevant. If you have created the uvs and texture in a external package you simply need to bring both to Zbrush.

OK you know what. I think I worded this wrong. What your telling me does work. Because the reason why I brought my work over to these other programs was because I wanted to lower my poly count. The lower polycount model that I did with the other programs do work when I bring it into Zbrush. That’s works fine. Sorry i shoud have said that first. Its the higher poly count model that wont except my maps. The higher poly model was the model that I used for this project. I just thought that once you create a map/UV for that certain model that it would work all the time.

But yeah the lower count model that I worked on works perfect. But when I use the higher count model for some reason it turns into what you see in those images.

I think I know what you mean though. I’m still not sure. But I think I’m sure…im not sure if this makes sense to you

but thanks so much for your help. ill keeps these notes and try to get more of a understanding of this. More experimenting

Yeah the model that I worked on did work fine as you can see here…

but its in a lower poly count.

heres the higher poly model

thanks for the help here

does that make sense

The models need to share the same topology in order to share the UVs as the UVs are locked to an specific order in the verts geometry.
You could subdivide your low poly version and use project all to get back the detail.
In any case the tools of Zbrush Zremesher and UV master are some of the best of the market and you could do most of the operations inside of Zbrush. Obviously these automatic tools don’t allow a very specific customization but if you start with Zbrush I highly recommend it. You will have less workflow problems.

“You could subdivide your low poly version and use project all to get back the detail”

Yep that’s what I did. And that works out fine for now. Almost perfect.

Zbrush is absolutely the only tool that I use to model anything. Its amazing. I love it dearly. But I’m sure I’m not using it to its fullest potential. Again thanks so much and I will keep experimenting with this awesome product.

thanks again

Also I wanted to say that I’m learning mappings. I m trying to get a full understanding of creating maps for the models. Mapping and having UV’s seem to be very important. Very important. I just saw that we can make maps in Zbrush as well, but it looks tuff.
