Grand Buddha at Ling Shan

hey guys, this is a piece i started a few days ago for the hardcore modeling challenge over at cg talk. its still very much a WIP but i thought i would share what i have so far. any comments or critiques are more than welcome

the challenge is to acuratly depict a colossus statue so i picked the “grand buddha at ling shan” for my first piece. i might end up entering more than one as the due date isnt until january 31st.

very nice work. I am buddhist and i love this model. :+1:

thanks guys im glad u like it. but unfourtuantly according to the rating so far someone else doesnt  . but oh well, if it pleased everyone i guess it wouldnt be art!

wouldn’t think about the rating if I were you. It’s good work you have here!

The rating is misleading, and I know it’s really annoying, I got that with a few of my works here too. In any case nice work!

CoryCosper,

Very nice piece!! Better still way to keep a positive attitude in reaction to the “low rating” that was given. Its always beyond me why someone would give a low rating without any pertinet information as to why. This forum is to enjoy art but better yet to help each artist develop no matter where each artist is at there learning/growing stage. Do people even look at the rating information 3 stars is average, 4 is good, & 5 excellent. This is somewhere between 4-5 stars, shouldn’t be given less than 3 stars minimum without very good reasoning. I’ll give it 4 stars only cause though I appreciate the tertiary tone of the image which almost lends to a monochromatic feel, I prefer a lil more use of color due to my own personal tastes. Keep up the great work will be looking for more from you!! :+1: :+1:

thanks for the support guys!

thanks for the suggestion angelj, now that you mention it, the trees are pretty dark and uninviting. i also want to tweak the material of the statue itself to get it looking a litttttle more grunge-ish. its a little too smooth. back to work i suppose:)

CoryCosper,

Yes the mood is a bit solemn due to the tone, and the statue has a very pristine feel to it. I can appreciate it if that is indeed what you wanted to convey. Though you mention adding some “grunge-ish” quality to it. Do you mean more of a rugged, aged, slightly decayed feel to it? If so then yeah that might add more character to the statue as long as its the feel you want the viewer to recieve. As it stands and as I mentioned the statue having a pristine feel I thought maybe you wanted a more “majestic/glorious” portrayal of it which might be better enhanced by a tone that is less somber once again depending what you want us to feel as a viewer.

cool model , like the expresion on his face
