Goblin

Hey All,
I made this generic goblin the other day to try and learn the Mental Ray renderer. I used one of the base meshes that comes with XSI, And tweaked the crap out of it!
All the shape modeling, detailing and color were done in Zbrush.
I used diplacement on a low poly mesh ,but I think it really needs a bump map too ! The pores don’t really come across.
If any one has any pointers about Mental Ray or SSS feel free!
I did not plan on taking the head any further, but CC are welcome anyway. PATTON

I think this is pretty good stuff. Only crit’ would have been to concentrate some color onto the scars, to show the skin damage.

Keep up with the good job !

Bye !

he has character, please post your render tree and happy new year

cool :] yep, hppy new year, that was one crazy to me

Great work, Patton :+1:

I really like the shapes and the colours. The displacementmap seems to work well. To render your hi-freq details like pores or small wrinkles, bump or normalmapping should be the best way to go.

Excellent modelling Patton, you’ve really captured personality there & those scars look really painful!
Goblin dentists must be really busy 24/7!!

Very nicely done.

Great little model.!!

Nice! And great to see your rapid progress in XSI/MR! Yes, your observation is correct. You will need a Bump Map for the high frequency detail (elaborate word for detail which looked at from further away resembles noise…).

Parallaxe shading (imho only good for stills) is probably just what the doc prescribed for you!

Good luck and the best for 2006 to you.
(Dang wrote 2005 first… now that starts again… sighh  )

Thanks for the kind words guys!

really cool stuff !!

and thank you very much for your render tree  really appreciate
congrats again :+1:

Hey Mr. Patton

Cool Goblin!
You’ve got the displacement working quite nicely.
If you were working in Maya I would say to check out the Gnomon Mental Ray rendering DVD #2, it has some good info on SSS. Not sure how that would transfer to XSI though.

Also Jan Sandström has a nice shader for using normal maps as bump maps in MR (also for Maya, but the plugin might still work for XSI)

(Plus lots of other MR goodness)

And here’s a link to thebigMuh’s (Daniel Rind’s) MR diffusion shader for XSI, which I’ve heard good things about:

Happy New Year!
