Forcing a quick save realtime?

Maybe there is a better way to do this, but is it possible to force a QS quick save?

With my current workflow I periodically “save-as” and increment filenames when I complete some important operation, but this results in many gigs daily of temporary interim files that must be deleted manually later. On top of that, these are all being wastefully uploaded to my cloud backup.

I know that I can shorten the quick save interval, but that doesn’t really do what I want.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi @artmaker

There is a QuickSave button in the top right of UI or you can just press 9 (hotkey for QuickSave).

Andy, Thanks – Perfect. did not see that! “9” easy.

Not a big deal, but while on the topic, is there a way to change the sort order in the Quicksave Lightbox view ?
Projects sort as expected with the most recent thumbnails first (left side) , but Lightbox view of quicksaves presents the oldest first with the most recent saves requiring scrolling to the right.
Thanks!

Not in my Lightbox. The newest saves are first in line on the left side. I’m on PC but it might be different on a Mac. I can’t say for sure.

hmm, maybe it is a Mac issue. It’s been this way as long as I can remember. 4 years, 2 Macs, various versions of zbrush and Mac OS.

not to diverge from this topic, but another long-term (Mac?) quirk is that after launching zbrush the button/cursor is misaligned until the window is resized. you can’t click the intended button without zbrush window resizing.

Hello @artmaker ,

You can set the maximum number of Quicksaves to be made in Preferences> Quicksave. This will limit the amount of data being created, but also increase your risk of lost work, so weigh that as you see fit.

The files that you choose to upload to your cloud storage are up to you. I might recommend relying on frequent quicksaves for quickly backing up work, and uploading periodic manual saves at certain milestones to your offsite storage.

There is simply no getting around the fact that files containing many millions of polygons get pretty large. If you want to work this way safely, you may need to invest in additional storage.

Re: Mac Cursor alignment issue.

Please see this article:

Thank you! :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @zber2

Can you check your quicksave display order again please. I’m on PC too but the QS files are sorted in numerical order (lowest to highest) and displayed from left to right. Recovery files appear after QS. You only have one quicksave in your screenshot so no way to tell the sort order. QS a few times and see if the sort is lowest to highest QS number in left to right display order.

If the display order is really highest to lowest as you say then you’re lucky and I hope you can tell me how you did that!

@tobor8man @artmaker

Yes, my bad! I don’t use quicksave that much so I had my Max QuickSave Files set to 1 and I only checked it the one time but after increasing Max QuickSave Files and testing it does save them sequentially from left to right. Oldest on the left and newest on the right. I tried changing my folder options in Windows Explorer to reverse the order in that folder but that doesn’t matter to Lightbox. It’s still the same, unfortunately. ZBrush has it’s own ideas.

@Spyndel , re the cursor alignment – that was it. The Mac OS double header. Hide Tab Bar fixed it. Thanks!
and, yes, “I might recommend relying on frequent quicksaves for quickly backing up work, and uploading periodic manual saves at certain milestones to your offsite storage.”
sounds like a good plan
