First Post - female head

Hi guys, I’ve been following this board for about a year now but I’ve never actually posted any of my work. I’m working on a personal project and my girlfriend is letting me use her head as reference. If you folks have any suggestions/comments/flames etc, I’d appreciate hearing from you, as I’d like to make this head as clean and as close to her face as possible. I’ve used Zbrush for some of the proportions and I plan on going back in and making a normal map with microdetails as soon as the modeling is finalized and UVs completed. Thank you!

Nice start, I think this will get more interesting once you have taken it into zbrush for those microdetails. Something to look for.

As of now, I think you might have tapered the skull a bit too much up at the top but I could be wrong.

This is a perfect start. Looks real… Good job. :+1:

Welcome to ZBC. That’s very impressive low-poly modelling … an excellent base upon which you can build. :+1:

I like it, a really good start. :+1: :+1: :+1:

Thanks for the responses everyone, they are very encouraging. I’ve updated the mesh a bit based on the feedback of the head shape and some other minor tweaks, mainly to the eyes. I also added that little thing in the corner of your eyes (cant remember the name). I think I’m almost ready to start detailing!

Hi again guys, I worked on this a bit today. I decided I didn’t like the flow of the mesh around the mouth/cheek/nose area so i retopologized a good chunk of the face. I was having trouble shaping her cheeks with the old topology. It feels like it flows a lot more naturally now… other than that I’m still playing around with her proportions here and there. On a side note, i really wish I hadn’t collapsed the symmetry modifier and made her features unsymmetrical yesterday… retopologizing and tweaking each side separately sucked!

I think the slope of the lips and mouth corners might be a bit off , but I guess that’s the kind of thing to finesse in ZBrush. It looks so nice in low-res, I guess I’m thinking of it in hi-res terms! Good work.

You said you wish you didn’t collaspe the symmetry modifier. Just delete half the face and reapply it. Then when you finished, collaspe and make your changes to each side. Or better still, apply an edit poly mod on top of the symmetry and change each side to your liking. This way you can always go down to the base mesh if you need to change anything, and collaspe when your happy with the model.

Scratchy;)

ps: your topology/flow looks great

small update… I took some time and made her eyes in Max.

Thanks for looking

another update… I’ve taken jenny into zbrush and Im finalizing her proportions. They feel almost right to me now. Some minor tweaks and its onto good ole projections master for microdetailing.
comments/suggestions very welcome!

I’ve been following this thread from day one…very nice modeling. It’s almost perfect, I only see that Jenny’s real mouth has a bit more of a bow shape to the upper lip, but it’s so close that I’d say you’ve nailed it.

How does Jenny feel seeing her head without any color or hair? Must be odd.

Somehow I missed this thread till now.
Just would like to say; great modeling, it looks more dead on with each step.
Keep posting the updates.

I WOULD HAVE TO SAY NICE ONE TO GET THIS FAR AND NOT LOSE FOCUS!!!
I CAN SEE FROM THE FRONT VIEW THAT CHIN CONTOUR AROUND THE JAW IS A LITTLE SO LITTLE BIT WIDE AND WILL ADD A HUGE LIKNESS IF JUST TIGHTEND A LITTLE… LOOKS VERY VERY GOOD SO FAR !!!

First off thank you for the encouragment everyone, it means more to me than you know  I played around with detailing tonight and Im pretty pleased with the results so far. Ive still got a ways to go but I feel like I got a good chunk done. I did some random screengrabs with one of the fast shaders to show the details. I’m using a variety of methods for the details but a large portion is done with the directional brush and alphas.

@slosh - she was shocked when i showed her the last zbrush update… I always told her she’d look like a boy without hair :stuck_out_tongue:

@giantsun - stay tuned, theres lots of updates to come!

Thanks for looking everyone, never throught a thread of mine would hit 1500 hits in 3 days. As always, comments and critique more than welcome–I’m always trying to improve. By the way, how do I get rid of the jaggies around the model (and in the eyes) when I do a best render? Antialiasing settings dont seem to help?

Nice modling and great details on the lips, keep at it, looking great.

Hey, I’m about done microdetailing I think. I tried exporting a 4k normal map on a 3 subdivision level (150,000 tries or so) of the model and it looks pretty good, but not nearly as good as it does in zbrush. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyway, here is a zbrush screengrab of what I’ve got…

That’s a very nice tutorial, thanks

sigh I’m never gonna texture her if I dont stop playing with her proportions… sorry the pic so big :o
