Fbx mesh wont export correctly out of zbrush

i imported a marvelous designer mesh into zbrush and after i was done with the cleaning up i split the mesh into two subtools respectively based on the garment

when i export the subtools as an fbx file. my pleats disappear and the mesh is replaced with a copy of the first subtool

im completely puzzled and confused as to why this occurs. no matter how many subtools i have they always get replaced with a copy of the first subtool.

merging works just fine on export but i would like to have different separate meshes under one fbx file.

Hey @NRR

In the FBX Exporter plugin in the Zplugin pallet there’s 3 options

Selected - that exports only the selected subtool
VIsible - that exports only the visible subtools
All - that exports all the subtools regardless of their visibility

That would be my first guess as to why it only exports one of them.

I think you should contact Pixologic Support about this problem.

i have tried, not the solution sadly. as you can see it doesn’t export a single subtool, it exports two but they’re duplicates.

i did find a solution though if any unlucky soul comes across this. you just have to save your zbrush file and then load it again. for some reason or another this helps get rid of the bug(it could be a feature :woman_shrugging:)

That is a strange issue it making duplicates, glade you found a fix for it. :grinning:

thank you! do you mind if you recreate the issue?

I’m not to sure if I could recreate the duplication thing you were having, the duplication thing is kind of a mystery to me. It could have been an issue your specific file. I know that FBX files contain quite a bit more information then your average 3D file like an OBJ so there must be more things that can go wrong occasionally with them.

i was gonna provide you with the steps to see if zbrush would give you the same result. you just need to import a custom fbx mesh, append anything to it and export it out as multiple subtools. when i do this the appended subtool doesn’t show up and instead the custom fbx mesh i add gets copied.

Okay I tried it that is weird, it exported the 1st subtool twice just like your issue you had. I have no idea why it dose that.

Pretty Crazy

yep, doesn’t make sense does it lol. like i said the only way to counter this is to save your zbrush file and load it up again. i still have no clue if this is an intended feature or a bug. someone from zbrush should address this.

I tried to export it as an OBJ extended file, its crashed on me twice. Maybe it best to export one subtool at a time but I could see how that might be a huge pain if you have a really complex scene with lots of subtools.

Wow, thank you… I had this exact problem and I’ve been wondering about this for hours and the solution indeed is just to save and restart it. :upside_down_face:
