hey fellow zbrushers.
ok ive learned alot about what the program can do but i still feel like i need to know more about the making movies aspect, so far i dont think that there is a tutorial to explain every function in the zmovie panel, can someone tell me why or how can i create a full animation to go beyound the tutorials that are out there, so far i know how to move a oject up and down and then stop recording and add new tools to the movie, but what i dont get is how can i get ex… both eyes to move in sequence with the jaw in southerns small tutorial. can anybody help thanks and ill have a another image real soon for you guys ok
ola, john!
i’m not sure what Zmovie of southern you are referring to, but i’ve started to do animations as soon as pixolator told us of the way to access the fabulous Magic Marker tool which allows you to rotate more than 1 object at a time. as this does not work with all systems you should take care, though.
hope this helps!
sorry guys i was referring to the pixologics pdf files that you can download. in that it somewhat tells you how to create a movie but im having trouble moving objects at the same time in my movie, if anybody know what all the features do in the zmovie panel dont be affraid to let me know
upham’s & methinks Kaz’s insights into ZMovie-palettes features can be found inside the ZAcademy Compilation . hope this helps!
Hey John,
I’ve made a number of ZMovies with ZBrush. Its quite a bit of fun when you start experimenting with what each feature does. The biggest lesson I learnt is to type everything out in a Word or text document FIRST! (And check the spelling!) I’ve been whinning about the Text-input in the zmovie pannel for ages. It doesn’t scroll as you type! So it’s best to copy and paste each step in as you go. I learnt using Kaz’s ZMovie tutorial to cover the basic’s (see Juandels link above). It’s two pages tucked away in the ZAcademy Compile by Kaz.
As for moving two eyes together like two human eyes … I’m afraid you’re out of luck. You can rotate one object at a time and record each still in the ZMovie pannel with the snapshot button … Second red button at the top of the ZMovie pannel.
Another option is to create two white spheres in one layer and then in a second layer create two black spheres on top, to act as irises. Snapshot the picture into your zmovie, then move the second layer by holding down the title-key (~) (beside the number ONE key - below the escape key) and click and drag to move the layer slightly. Snap-shot the new eye position, and then move the layer again and again, snap-shotting until you have … ten to twenty frames. Now you can just play the frames back. Hmmmm… come to think of it you may just be able to click the record button and move the layer and record it as a animation!
You can use a external program to grab a Zbrush screen, then crop them to just the part you want. Save them to disk then load the pics up in the texture palette > IMPORT. Back in the Movie pannel click on TXTR and this will import the selected texture into the current frame. You may notice that the picture is for some reason upside down! You have to rotate it in the Texture palette before you import it.
Now after saying all that, two things to remember, a zmovie can end up to be 5meg and not many people want to download them and you better have a good sized webspace to store them. And two: when ZBrush 1.23 comes out, everything will be via ZScripts which are tiny text files and easy to transport around the net. I wouldn’t be surprised if zmovies get phased out come version 1.5.
Hey, I’d love to see your results John. If you need a hand -AFTER- reading Kaz’s ZAcademy tut, just sing out. Zmovies are the one aspect of ZBrush I can boast I feel confident with!

Upham
wow, upham! never thought of that (but then i did not find the tilde(?)key until day before yesterday ).
the first frames of this one were done using the magic marker tool mentioned above. what i did was creating a head (without putting a marker) and then one eye (mark), snapshot and moved it a bit aside (mark) and the “bees” (mark, mark, mark) after having loaded the magic marker tool as described by pixolator when starting the ZBrush-sitting. this enabled me to move the marked objects “ensemble” while in edit mode and dragging the cursor carefully around to avoid the eyes popping out of the head… no problem to rotate/scale/move it via the gyro, too, but then you get the gyro in your ZMovie as well…
i think i did a ZMovie capture of this first but decided i wanted shadows so i did bestrender/export each frame separately and gif-ed them in imageready. as already mentioned, the magic marker (being in beta-stage only uptonow) does not load properly on all systems… win 2k mayhaps? i just know that MacOS 8.6 handles it (contrary to myself) without any problems
Well, I hope Pixolator does not do away with Zmovie panel. Instead, I hope he improves on it.
Perhaps having options to save out the movies as avi or quicktime would help in the file size.
I also (still) say that a record sound option be implemented.
My two cents.
