Dragon Wing help!

Hi!
I am completely new to Zbrush, and I have made a few model prior to the one I am tackling now, but I have come across a problem… how to do the membrane between the wings. I did some searching around to figure out how to do it, and tried the magnet Zsphere, which didn’t seem to work (well, it worked, but I couldn’t get it how I wanted as it distorted the wing).
I also tried messing around with the adaptive skin settings, but no matter how hard I try, it keeps screwing up the rest of the body for some reason.

Is there a better way to do this? Thanks so much in advance! :D Here is an image of what I mean (the bottom image is the distorted version when I change the membrane curve settings): ![help.jpg|1000x600](upload://iq2TqOMNjunVAshvuk73Ssrx9Ul.jpeg) [](http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_zbc_display_images)

I’m in the same boat as you, trying to get the right look for my creatures wings.

I read in one of the forums that you could use a plane as a subtool and the move the plane into the shape you want. Would probably take a while though, but seeing as you have the shape you’re looking for, it would probably be quicker in the long run. I just spent a while remaking my character the right way for the membrane curve to work, and it’s still not what I want, so the subtool idea might be your best bet too.

I read your thread because I was wondering this exact thing. I am a new user to zbrush as well and was trying to make a dragon wing. That membrane is tricky, and all my research on the web kept saying things about magnet spheres and whatnot. I am using zbrush 4, and through some trial and error I figured out my own way.

All I have tested however is on the wings, I havn’t tried applying this to a full model yet so the modeling part is going to be theory only, I’ll get back to you with results when I’ve gotten to that point in a couple days.

As of the moment, on wings alone, you can go to your tool menu on the right side of the screen, under the adaptive skin dropdown, turn on “Use Classic Skinning” and hit preview. Move the Ires and Mbr to your desired liking. Also make sure the Mc and Mp tabs are selected.

Now for the theory part of this, when applying this to a model, just mask the wings and apply the membrane this way. If this doesn’t work, then its back to the drawing board. I’ll let you know in a couple days if it worked, or you can let me know if you’re already ready to model the wings membrane.

Good Luck.

In case you are still having an issue, I was able to create some wings for my creature using topology. There was a thread explaining it but I can’t find it so I’ll try to explain.

I still had the zsphere model, so I used the joints in my creatures fingers to help create my topology. I started by draw a line down each finger, making points on each joint on the fingers of my wing. Then I started drawing a line between each finger that would be the membrane of my wing. Then I added more lines on the membrane section so I could shape my wing the way I wanted.

That will give you enough to work with, but keep in mind that it is a flat plane. If you want more of a solid mesh, just adjust the skin thickness on the topology menu before making it an adaptive skin. Warning that when you divide it will start to put in at the edges and smooth out the points, so be prepared to adjust the mesh as you divide it.

Hopefully that will help.
