I’m Still Trying to figure out Displacement Maps and how to use them properly in 3ds Max. There seems to be a lot of different methods out there, for each of the rendering engines. And it was hard to pick one that suited me. I’ve read as much as I could and followed tutorials but I am still loosing a lot of detail from my displacement maps. Below is the method I tried. I would appreciate any tips people have.
I sculpted a valley landscape from the terrain3D tool in zbrush.
There are 6 levels of division with a Polygon count of 984,064 in the 6th.
I went to Sdiv 1 and created a displacement map using MultiDisplacement 3. ‘Adaptive’ was selected in the Tool Displacement menu. I exported an OBJ of Sdiv 1 of the Valley. I imported this OBJ into 3DS Max and converted it to an editable poly. I then added a Mesh smooth modifier from the modifier list, with 4 Iterations in the ‘Render Values’ and 3 in the viewport so I could see what was what. Next I added the ‘Displace’ mod from the Modifier list, Ticked the ‘Luminance Center’ and ‘Use existing Mapping’ boxes, Placed my Newly created Displacement map in the ‘Bitmap Box’, Increased the strength and rendered using Mental Ray… The images show the Zbrush tool, and the Max Render with a Displacement strength of 60. You can easily see the Difference in Detail.
Once again, Id really appreciate any tips or help.
