Delete Tools from Project? (answered)

Hey guys, I’m moving this into a different forum, had it posted in the OLD troubleshooting forum, not getting seen.

I’ve got a project that has a TON of tools in it, mainly planes that I used to make alphas and a bunch of extra adaptive skins. I can’t figure out how to get rid of the tools in the project. Every time i save, it takes forever because it’s saving all these extraneous tools that I don’t need anymore, but I can’t figure out how to get rid of them. Any tips? Thanks in advance!

you can save out a .ztl file (tool>save as)
and open that into a new project…document…whatever you want to call it.

When you save that one it won’t have all of those extra tools that aren’t used anymore.

Ah!..that makes sense goast! though again, just not very intuitive. figured there must be a way to just select the tool and go “remove from project” or something like that. Thanks man!

Just hit delete on the tool in the subtool panel. It will delete it from the document. Bugged though, if you’ve been using zbrush for hours then sometimes it won’t work and will not delete the tool. Otherwise it will.

If you have a tool with a ton of subtools that you want to delete, use subtool master, make them all invisible then delete invisible. This leaves you with only the top subtool, which you can hit delete on and it goes bye bye.

Hmm…extra could be on to something there. I was thinking you had .ztl files that were loaded into memory and were being saved with the project. Not actually subtools within the tool.

My bad.

No you’re thinking correctly Goast, that IS the problem. All the tools that are saved with the project are NOT subtools, they’re just loaded in the tool palette. I did what you suggested and the file saves MUCH faster now. thanks!

Extra, I’m pretty sure I’ve tried deleting stuff from the subtool menu, but it stays in the tool palette and then gets saved in the project. I’ll give it another shot though. I’ll fiddle with subtool master too. Thanks for the info!

Can’t you just restore the list of tools in the Tool panel using the ‘R’ button then save your project

richard - that just clears it out of the mini tool window. Not the actual loaded tools.

It usually works but I’ve noticed a bug where like you said it won’t delete the tool. That happens only after I’ve had zbrush open for a long time, hours. Usually it works fine to just hit delete, but sometimes, no joy. Rebooting zbrush makes that problem go away.

Have you guys seen this…

zber2 - didn’t see that one…tooo many pages!!!
good to know though.
Thanks for pointing that out.

Perfect! Thanks zber2! Sounds like that’s what extra was saying too…

I thought that delete the subtool only since it is in the subtool menu rather than tool, Z4 has some contradicting method of approach.

wow, super buggy. delete is duplicating my tools. nice.
