I was doing this for the 3d character art competition on Facebook but decided that I wouldn’t make it in the deadline and I don’t want to rush it. I’m exploring creating a character head to toe and finally getting into detailing like I should. I’d very much like critiques and suggestions even. Here is the colored version thus far:Here is the rough of the final composition:
Damn! This is going to be awesome! Can’t wait to see future updates, keep up the good work
Thanks Haz3y! I’m taking my time having fun with this. Going back and forth between painting and sculpting. Small update: changed proportions and face masses around. worked on the feet too but I’ll show those at a later time.
Direct X 10 makes for really good preview renderer… I haven’t seen the translation of the values from DX11 to Mental ray but I will soon enough. Crits and comments very much welcomed.
Mental Ray texturing
First pass on the hair. Zbrush to Maya pipeline. Hairs looking pretty funky at the moment. Think I need to flare out the sides. If anyone has any suggestions or critics lemme know. Also going to include the images that I’m been basing this concept on.

Better pass on the hair
I hollowed out the stomach, the abs were just too weird to me. the shading so far is a lil off and not sure what I can do to make it feel more real. if anyone has anymore tips let me know!
Closed the mouth, ramped up his texture vibrance, darkened his hair, gave his pants a outer glow (via facing ration node) and few other things. I want to get his stomach to a better still feel by adding more purples and making it look shinier/slick and well… more gross looking. anyone have tips on working with gloss and spec on characters? tutorials on this would be super handy.
Relying more on Reflection rather than specular.
Damm! I loved this this character he is so unique and awesome!
Awesome take on him man, great modeling!
Thank you a ton! I’m really glad you’re liking where I’m going with this character
Did Lord Raptors Tombstone heavily based off of the tombstone of a Josiah Leavitt who died 1717. Felt fitting.
So I need some serious feedback on this model. It feels lacking and I’d like this work to be pretty top notch. If you guys would be so kind as to fill me in on where I’m lacking in modeling, texturing, posing, presentation, rendering. I want to push this model into something that superbly stands out.
Redoing the shaders and lighting. Spending more time actually trying to get the materials to feel proper and detailed properly. getting really tripped up with spec/gloss.
Found something really odd with the body being that the SSS wasn’t initially working. The normal map was applied and they looked sunken in instead of popping out. I flip the normals and its proper but the SSS didn’t work. turns out I had to flip the R and G values of the Normal map and it all works properly.
He’s looking pretty great!
