Ctrl Z doesn't work 99.9% of the time

Hi (Is this the right place to put this?)

I’ve been trying to do the skull to head anatomy tutorial in the ZBrush Character Creation book, but the ctrl+z hotkey doesn’t work most of the time. I think it has something to do with Spotlight, but I don’t know. I go into ZBrush, open up the PolySphere in the ZBrush tools file, then I do something and ctrl+z [sometimes] works the first time. After that it won’t work and I have to do it manually. The UNDO/REDO options at the very top of the Edit drop-down menu are greyed out also.

I recently got two “NSUS” monitors, which have something called “Splendid Video Intelligence Technology”. Also I recently had low disk space, but I moved the files that were causing that, so that isn’t it.

Do you have the latest release ZBrush 4R6 P2 ?

Not sure.

I don’t remember downloading a patch, and it doesn’t say P2 anywhere

ZPlugins:AutoUpdate

Okay I got that.

ZBrush still has the undo problem

I was going to suggest new hotkeys but i found it has some extrange behaviors
In Edit palette you have the Spotlight Undo and the Tool Undo. I tested to assing a new hotkey for Undo (i.e Shift+J). It worked just twice, then the button resets the hotkey. I stored the hotkeys but still doesn´t work even if the hotkey popup shows the new hotkey (Shift+J)
I´m not sure what is the problem in your Zbrush but that button it´s not working as it should IMHO. Probably Ctrl+Z is special shortcut and can´t be overwriten
May be a clean installation will solve it or you can optionally place those Undo and Redo buttons in your UI in a handy place.

The UNDO/REDO options at the very top of the Edit drop-down menu are greyed out also.

They are greyed out for me, too. What about the Undo button below that? (edit->tool->undo…)

Try pressing shift+alt on your keyboard. (both on the left-hand side of your keyboard)
Shift+alt switches between QWERTY and QWERTZ which means that z and y on your keyboard are swapped.
This has happened to me a lot in ZBrush and Photoshop.

What OS are you guys running?

I have the same thing sometimes, I’m on windows 7. What happens with me is that I’m on an azerty keyboard, and sometimes it seems that when using ZBrush, the system switches between azerty and qwerty settings. The way I fix this is resize ZBrush and on the taskbar, lower right, switch the language back from English to the original. Off course if you’re not on an azerty keyboard this is probably of no use to you, unless your system switches from qwerty to azerty which would mean that Ctrl+Z becomes Ctrl+W.

Something similar is happening with 3DSMax for some reason.

Also I am using 64-bit

Sorry for the double post but I think it’s been slightly fixed. It still doesn’t CTRL+Z correctly if I start with the 2.5D, insert a Polysphere Subtool, then press edit and sculpt. It does the same thing with Polysphere. What I’ve found is that the Undo History works if I click on it. Is there any way I could map that (CTRL+Z goes back on the Undo History while CTRL+Shift+Z goes forward) to a key?

If you hover the cursor over the button of your choice and then CTRL+ALT+Click it, it’ll allow you to set a custom hotkey combination, so you can then press CTRL+Z for undo. Then go into preferences > hotkeys > store. That should do it.

Tried that.

Didn’t work.

Here’s a video showing what’s wrong

Video is set to private. Can’t see it. Only thing I could think of now is maybe preferences>Init ZBrush or DefaultZscript in the topright corner to reset settings, but chances are you’ve already tried that as well. Here’s hoping some ZBrush wizard comes to the rescue.

I’m sure you’ve done a google search but here’s just in case:

“When setting the MaxPolyCount higher before accessing before edit mode, all the shortcuts of the edit mode are not working anymore.
But doc undo works just fine.”

“not sure how configuration/language-specific this is but you could try inserting these lines into your ZStartup\HotKeys\StartupHotkeys.txt:”

[EDIT:UNDO,634] // Ctrl+Z

[EDIT:TOOL:UNDO,634] // Ctrl+Z

Sorry… I accidentally left my key up on the screen. Hopefully this filter Youtube has’ll censor off that part.

The number after ZBrush 4R 6 P2 is NOT your serial number. Cropping off the window and menus makes it harder to guess what is wrong.
