Colorize brush (& others)

I’m experimenting with 2.5d tools at the moment, but I’m having some trouble with the brushes.

The Colorize brush seems to paint nothing but black, no matter what colour or material I select. I’m sure the Colorize brush is supposed to colour things (have I got this wrong?), but I can’t for the life of me work out how. The Intensity brush does exactly the same thing. As for the Glow brush, that seems to do absolutely nothing.

I’m sure I’m missing something (probably a lot) to do with setting these brushes correctly, but I can’t for the life of me work out what it is.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Zbrush version 3.12 for OSX

The color adjustment brushes (including Colorize) do not use your current color or material choices. They only affect the unshaded colors that are already on the canvas. (In other words, the colors that you’d see if you turned on Render>Flat.)

In short, they need something to already be present before they’ll have any effect.

I’m still not following.

Forgive me, but are there some steps you can give to show me how it works, because everything I try with the Colorize Brush just paints things black (even the colours I see when I turn on Render>Flat) so I have no idea what the brush actually does. The Intensity Brush does the same.

Sorry if I sound a bit dim, but I am having trouble finding any documentation on using the colour adjustment brushes.

I have the same problem.
This problem can be seen even on ZBrush 3.12B.
I’m using MacBook.

everytime I use ColorizeBrush or IntensityBrush, everything turn into black, no matter whether Render>Flat is turned on or not.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

I’ve duplicated this and reported it to the development team. Good catch!

Thanks for your reporting and I’m looking forward to finding the solution!
:+1:

I installed ZBrush 3.2, but this problem isn’t fixed yet.

Isn’t this a common problem?
What shall I do to solve it?

There is no solution at this time. The development team apparently didn’t have time to address this particular issue and still make the June release date. I would expect to see it fixed with ZBrush 4.

Thanks for the reply and I’m so sorry that I bothered you again.

OK, I’ll wait until the next release.

By the way, ZBrush 3.2 is so good!
Thanks pixologic!

[Edit: Just tested the Blur Brush properly, with the advice of Marcus below and it woks fine for me. Good stuff]

The Blur Brush should be fine - though you may need to adjust the Sample Size in the Tool>Modifiers.

Yes, as Marcus says, the blur brush worked correctly for myself.

In addition, I tried the colorize brush on another computer (13" MacBook Pro) but it worked wrong.

Now I consider this problem as a common problem and I hope this problem will be solved in next version of ZBrush.

I tested again Marcus and your right, the Blur Brush does work. Adjusting the sample size helps increase the effect, thanks.

Cool.

One thing I have noticed is that the BlurBrush only seems to blur colour information, but not depth information. The tool tip says it also blends depth information.

Am I missing something again?

ZAdd perhaps?

I tried that, but ZAdd with the BlurBrush just draws a big fat line instead of blurring, even on 1.

Zbrush 3.2 (Mac)

OK, I can reproduce that. I’ll pass on the information, thanks.

Thanks Marcus. Much appreciated.

Yep, also I have this blur problem. I hope it will be solved soon :+1:

I adore Zbrush and am having this problem as well. It used to be that the colorizebrush would paint whatever color you have selected - but I guess it’s like what was posted earlier that - it only works on the colors on the canvas. Could you guys fix this if you have some extra time? Thanks for the great program.
