Blacksad

Hey everybody, meet Blacksad. For those who don’t know, Blacksad is a French graphic Novel written by Juan Diaz Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido.

Anyways, I modeled the character with XSI, Maya and Zbrush. High frequency details in Zbrush. Normal and Ambient Occlusion mapping with XSI (Ultimapper) and Zbrush (Zmapper). And finally the diffuse texture was painted in Zbrush and GIMP.

Hope you like him -Derek

Here are some pictures in various stages of production, will post texture, ambient occlusion and normal maps in a bit. -Derek

I like the suite especially what was your method upon making it?

The character is around 4700 polygons (quads) at the moment and there’s a little room for further reduction.

Thanks Prospect. Originally I started box modeling it in Maya with some medium detail tweaking in Zbrush piece by piece. Somewhere along the lines I switched my concept from a High-Poly character into Low-Poly version. Most of the work after the switch used the tweak tool in XSI which is hands down one of the most powerful Poly modeling tools I’ve ever seen. Basically though, there were no shortcuts used on modeling, everything started from a box primitive and was freeform sculpted and welded together into one final piece with alot of Zbrushing in between to get the right forms.

Here’s a shot from how it used to look when it was a High-Poly project from a while back -Derek
