Best render issue in Zbrush 3.5

When you applied the Normal RGB mat on an object, and you press best render, the intensity of the normal map got reduced way down. I’ll post some screen shots later tonight. This doesn’t happened in Zbrush 3.1 at all.

Here you can see the difference between the two. With Zbrush 3.1 the difference are at a minimal.

Some help on this would be great.

Thanks

Sorry, I cannot get it to work. In addition I also get the old white speckles from 3.1 when best rendering. That used to be solved by turning of multithreading for Best Renders but I cannot find a switch for that in 3.5.

The drop in intensity is due to a slight blurring that is applied. If you look in the material palette you will find a button named Channel Descriptors, which is most likely a button used for internal testing. When pressed you can see a blur amount that by default is at 4 (new feature ! :)).

But in short, no I do not think we can fix this one on our own. I believe I tried everything that I could think of and that used to work.

Luckily you should still have 3.1 installed for canvas painted normal maps.

TVeyes,
Thanks for trying to trouble shoot it. As for the white dots issue, I was able to fix it by going to preferences> Performance and turn off multidraw.

Yes I still have 3.1 installed. I hope pixologic support can look into this.

I use this at work all the time. I would hate to keep on using 3.1 because of this issue.

Thank you ninjatastic,

Did not realise that Preferences > Performance > MultiRender and MultiDraw were merged in 3.5. That solved my problem. Well apart from the bluriness/lack of intensity :frowning:

TVeyes,
I think I got it. but can you do a test on your end to see if you are getting the same result?
So select the Normal RGB material, under modifiers select S1
and change the spherical value to 100. I see almost no difference between best render and preview after I change that setting.

And of course turn off multi draw so you won’t get those nasty white dots.

Seems like 89 is the sweet spot. Let me know what you think.
I’m not sure if this work around it’s the right thing to do. I hope support can look into this and provide some answers.

You are right ! I did change the spherical material modifier before but apparently also changed something else at the same time.

Spherical at 100 gives perfect 1:1 best renders, just be sure to set Render > Antialiasing and Edge to 0. And Preferences > MultiDraw turned off like you said.

I am a bit curious about hardedged designs on the canvas. With Spherical at 100 you can notice a blueish edge to the Material Icon. But as far as I can tell it does not seem to have an effect on the rendered output. Should probably do a compare between 3.1 and 3.5 documents.

Thank you for figuring this out Ninjatastic.
