ZRemesher creating spirals, not loops

Hello, I don’t remember having this problem in previous versions of zbrush, but this happens when I used the 2018 legacy as well. For some reason, I cannot get zremesher to make basic edge loops. I have tried using guides, and all the options in zremesher with no luck. This makes unwrapping impossible. This is a muscle that wraps around the eye. It’s a basic doughnut shape. Like I said, I didn’t have this problem before and I cant figure out how to get around it. This is a picture of the mesh in 3d Coat. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Sorry you’re having some trouble! Unfortunately a picture of your mesh in some other program is not as useful as seeing what settings you might be using in ZB, so I can only speculate and give some general information.

  1. Spirals can still happen in ZRemesher, though it is much rarer in more recent versions of ZBrush. However I do believe I’m seeing more spirals on non symmetrical objects in the new version than I was a year or two ago. Still, make sure you’re using the most up to date version of Zbrush, currently 20191.1.2

  2. This is probably an issue specific to your mesh, not ZRemesher in general, though. You may not have had this problem previously, but you weren’t working on this same mesh with every version of ZRemesher. Zremesher struggles more with certain types of topology than others–especially meshes with overly sharp edge angles, or topology that is smashed too closely together, like what happens when you use the clip brush.

  3. Difficult to tell without the original, but your mesh topology looks a little extreme around the interior hole–thin edges, stretched in places and compressed in others. This could very well cause ZRemesher to take a bit longer, and make less helpful choices about how to draw the topology. Try Dynameshing the target mesh prior to ZRemeshing. This may clean your mesh up or fix problematic issues, making it easier for Zremesher to parse.

  4. Once Dynameshed, try increasing and reducing the target polycount, or reducing the adaptive size slider in ZRemesher–this makes it prioritize even distribution of polygons.

I just Zremeshed this vaguely similar mesh, and Zremesher seems to have done a pretty decent job with it at default settings. If I wanted nothing but clean edge loops all the way around though, I would have to roll up my sleeves and put in some work:

zremesher

You could try using Zremesher guides, but personally I find this results in too much costly trial and error. If I ever feel like I need to use guides to get an acceptable result and guides don’t immediately fix the problem, I just retopo the problem areas manually.

Good luck!
