Z and Y Axis Confusion

If you follow my searches into why I need to follow this thread’s (brilliant) tutorial about making a hair braid by using Z to do the twist rather than the expected Y, you will see why I do not grasp how it’s possible that the logical sequence for me to follow this tutorial was to use the Z axis as if it is the Y axis.

The tutorial - http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?120280-A-Simple-Clay-Based-Method-for-Braided-Hair

Any clarity to what I might have done would be appreciated. I did follow all of the directions, but only can do this tutorial by using Z axis instead of the Y axis.

If I’m understanding what your saying, you need to change the orientation of the cylinder in Tool > Preview and then click ‘Store’

Thanks zber2. But, I’m not sure why I would need to do anything. My real problem is understanding how the axis on my version of zBrush (4R3) has no default like yours or, in this case, Kathy (the creator of the tutorial). Obviously, something is different, but if it this is about fixing a setting or a preference or a default, then knowing about it would be good.

But, just pulling up a primitive and resizing it, then turning it, should not by default change the axis. Right?

If you look at the tutorial, she does mention to adjust the orientaion in the Preview window in #1.

Yes. But, this isn’t readjustment of the axis. It’s just flipping the tube upright. The Z axis should still be facing away from me, no matter what I do to the object.

… in order to change the axis, you have to change orientation in the Preview window then click ‘Store’ like I mentioned in my first post.

Thanks, but do you usually change your axis, when you are in zBrush? I can see that this is possibly needful in rare cases, but I would as soon leave the default as Z facing away and Y up and down and X across. Is yours different than this? Mine by default is not as I describe here. As soon as I open zBrush, my Z is up and down and the Y is away from me.

Yours is definatey not right. You might have changed something in the Picker menu to cause this. Give me a minute to get a screen grab.

zber, I don’t have access to check, but this will be one of the first things I do when I can get into zBrush.

Thanks so much!

This is how my window looks. I changed the Continuous Orientation to Mouse Down Orientation manually, since the default was Continuous. Still, the same problem. This is what a twist looks like in Deformation Twist on the Y.

Yes, rotating the mesh on the canvas does change the axis in the Deformation subpalette. If you rotate it on the canvas, you should also rotate it in the Preview window.

Thanks for your extra patience with me. You said this at the beginning and I simply did not understand. THANK YOU.

No problem! Your welcome.
