Yaksha comics- Barren Land Illustration Tutorial- part 1

[]part-1.jpg

Ok Guys I am very busy with the first issue of my comics, so this tutorial might get finished in a month or so - maybe even more.

N.B. -Now I am illustrating my comic using zbrush and would like to show steps by steps how to illustrate in zbrush - easy and fast. I do not stand a chance in front of “great” Mytholon’s tutorials but still I would try my best to give something back to zbrush community - what I have learned in last 8 months browsing here.

This tutorial will be a fusion of 2d and 3d. I will experiment a lot, so if I provide zscript, there will be lots of dos and undos. Nothing is fixed so I may change few things in the next part, though I will be creating it as a wallpaper for one of my demon characters.

Tools/materials/3d objects used -

  1. Simple brush- painting sky

  2. Smudge tool - detailing for sky

  3. 3D plane - for creating ground with an alpha.

  4. Intensity brush - for creating Lava reflections in the barren ground.

  5. Highlight brush1 - for shades of the ground and sky.

  6. Shading enhancer brush - for giving overall highlight effects.

  7. a tree created out of zspheres - I got hold of one from this forums, though you can easily create one of shape you want.

  8. Material - a) fast shader for sky ( though basic material recommended)

    b) Ground and tree - Material pack 2 ( I forgot the name, but

then you can experiment with lots of cool materials of MP2 just bring the specular down to 0  )

8 ) the most important part is the lighting - a lot of experimentation is required for the right effect.

Sky is very easy to create, fill the canvas with a dark color, and then use simple brush to add different shades of same color - ya it will be like dotted clouds all over canvas but thats ok  - use rgb intensity very low.

Then use smudge tool and smudge all over canvas - increasing and decreasing the size as well as focus. You can play around with it, and try giving different shapes and directions - main aim of this tutorial is to show how much fun it is illustrating in zbrush. You can practically just go on playing and still something good will come out of zbrush.

Now bake this layer and create a new layer. Creating a new layer is very important because if you want to delete an element later it will become impossible. Also I never merge my layers for same reason. (Though sometimes you get layer shortage :o - and so I demand more layers in zbrush, making Aurick hate me for not merging layers

Check zbrush tutorials in your software - Alpha terrain zscript for using alphas to make the ground - simply use less elevation to get low ground instead of mountain. You can also try few deformations in projection master on the final plane as well.

Using perspective( also basic idea of it) place the ground as you wish.

use a dark brown color and apply a predetermined material. Now adjust lighting to make the grooves visble and ground darker - presenting a late evening scenario. i used only default lighting,( click on the light switch to make it inversely darker- though intensity was full.)

Now try giving different shades using highlight brush

Use intensity brush - low intensity of say 11, for painting on the grooves and dark lines of ground to create “Lava” effect. Because of the dark brown color used, when intensified will give red glowing color, making it look like as if light is coming out of distant lava below.

Use shading enhancer brush to further brighten up the lava effect at different places.

Always bake the layer if you dont want a new material (when selected) to mess things up on the canvas if loaded in same slot.

Create trees from zspheres and place them in another layer, give a predetermined material and adjust the lighting.

end of part 1.

So this is just tip of iceberg mainly showing techniques and tools required for illustrating. Still lot of elements needs to be added, demon character needs to be created, post effects in photoshop- will complete them as soon as I get time from my comics.

BTW I have a zscript of this tutorial, but gets problem while loading the ground tool and loading material from MP2, any one know how to solve this problem ?

Cya soon.

Here are few of my finished illustrations for my comics. I created them using almost same tools and techniques. Additional tools - bump tool, fiber brush and snake hook brush.

Honestly, the first post made me doubt it a bit. But then the second post made me a lot more interested. Looks cool so far, one of the topics that actually gets me to post.

Maybe try to blur up the particles in the blue blast thing…
and move the trees that are above the explosion under the light, right now it looks like the trees are sprouting from the blast or something…

Nt I had merged the layers of the that blast illustration and cannot edit it anymore - Thats the reason now I never merge my layers

I can understand theres nothing there in the illustration right now, as the first part is just about right tools and technique, I know people will be more interested when I put on the second part.

This tutorial can be better with a zscript.

Well buddy

Those were few of my very first illustrations, did not even knew about zscripts then.

I am creating a bigger illustration currently, hope to save some zscript and other notes on it this time.

Great! I can’t wait. I hope your next ilustration, wckedsunny. :+1:

Great start, look forward to seeing the first issue!
