X-Men: Phoenix (Jean Grey) W.I.P

Hello everybody. I was thinking of what I should model next, and i have decided on modeling Phoenix from the X-Men. I thought it would be cool to not only get to model a prominent figure in the comic book world, like I did Spider-Man, but also to work with things such as cloth (Her belt/sash), hair and when the character is rigged and everything i can create a lot of chaos with particles and effects.

But first, I must decide on what the costume will look like as well as the character. I want to go with the original phoenix costume, but i want to make it look a lot more detailed than a spandex suit :p. So to begin this thread, I will post some sketches and then work my way up.

Comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

I like this design a lot. Its from Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. I like how the tubing of the costume radiate from the Phoenix emblem. I’m going to use this as a base idea. But I want it to look better.

Hey Verde, I cant wait to see where you go with the costume. My suggestion would be to use the original colors and main symbols (phoenix on the chest, etc.) but push your own originality onto it as much as possible. Research different types of materials and try to combine multiple materials and fabrics to get a new and refreshing take on a classic costume!

Super cool!

Thanks Ctrl+S B4 U Save, As much as i like the Marvel ultimate alliance 2 costume I know it would be best to design the costume myself. It will be original, yet keeping the same details as the classic costume. That way it wont resemble the game and people wont think I ripped it off.

Thanks cherub_rock, more to come!

Nice!

I’m digging the red one.

Thanks everyone. While Im contemplating the design of the costume, I thought i would go ahead and start sculpting the head. I have the basemesh all proportioned. And Im starting with the face. Theres a ways to go. Here are two renders so far. one of the model and the other of the model with additions from zbrush. Dont worry, she wont have the chola-esque makeup in the final render, this was all quick, doodling fun to see where the sculpt was going.

Looking good so far, I’m diggin the red color theme as well…but def. understand wanting put your own twist on it. Nice clean wires too. :+1:

Thanks sheaspina. I guess dark phoenix is the route to go then. The red color scheme is indicative of the dark phoenix in the comic book.

Once I have a good idea with the costume going, I’ll post it.

Also Ive been referencing Famke Jennsen for the face of Phoenix. It wont look dead on because I’m not good at likenesses. But I’m glad it will work out that way.

Heres an update on the face before I go to bed.

I restructured her face a little. I refined the lips and eyes. As well as the cheek bones. I did a little polypaint to see where Im at. i think I need to add a little ā€œfatā€ to the eye area, and other places. her face is getting a little thin and skeletonish.

Also…note to self…reference makeup and eyebrow types…yikes. Especially the eyebrows. :stuck_out_tongue:

Below are two pics. one with poly paint. the other without.

Excellent work. One suggestion: on the face, (if I were you) I’d look for some real redhead girls pictures on the web to give Jean Grey more ginger-ish features. As it is right now, it looks kind of ā€œneutralā€. That’s all.

I don’t see what having red hair has to do with facial structure, But at the same time I know what you are saying. I was going for a Famke Jannsen look. She played Jean Grey in the phoenix. But at the same time I dont want the model to look like her.

Almost there with the face. Here are two versions. One is Jean grey regular, and the second one she is being overturned by the Phoenix force.

(The Hair was done in post)

That Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) is not a real redhead and yes, every hair color has its unique features. Ok, there are faces that could easily pass off, when dyed or wearing a wig, as any type but there are some that only match with one color (their own, of course). Good ginger examples: Julianne Moore, Gillian Anderson and Geri Halliwell.

Well obviously Famke Jannsen is not a real red head. Shes got black eyebrows. :D. I think what your saying is to go with what ā€œnaturalā€ red heads have. like freckles and pale skin, and reddish blonde hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. stereotypical. I will try to make her look more…natural/irish, if thats the concensus. There is a thing called black irish as well, which irish people have darker features, tan skin, darker hair etc. But whatever, I’m not going to argue this to death, i will work through the middle. And, I am what you refered to as a natural ā€œgingerā€.

And you never noted any difference with a ā€œnaturalā€ blonde or brown haired friend??? That’s rich! lol!

Variation in races. Im pulling out the artistic freedom card and ending my turn.
