What´s the best way to learn Zbrush? Just answer if you are very familiar with ZBrush

Hello folks,

I’d like to learn Zbrush … I use Max as my 3d application (for games purposes) and i have seen that many developers (for example, Epic Games), include Zbrush in their pipelines… So, my intention is to learn this application too.

My question is: how to learn (efficiently) this 2.5d application?

I´d like you that are already very familiar with the application (and not beginners, like me), share your opinion.

Any help will be very appreciated…

Best regards!

The fastest way to learn is to invest in your learning. That is what I had to do.

Basically, set aside another 500 to 1000 dollars and buy the as many training DVDs as you can. Gnomon and digital Tutors seem to be the best.

I suggest that you get the Introduction to Zbrush with Meats and head sculpting and texturing with Alex Alvarez to most people wanting to learn.

After that just work with them every day. www.thegnomonworkshop.com

or just start here: http://www.zbrush.info/

Most important and it might sound like a joke but I mean it:

USE IT!!! It really requires that you get into the mindset till you see how some menue options comet ogether and make sense. You also have to USE the normal and displacment maps it generates. Due to the fact that there are no defacto standards regarding those maps you have tu USE them a lot to gain experience.
Get your pipeline established before you get to much into the detail. Take a sphere and details that and have it look good in your target renderer before you spend ANY time on painting or modeling.

So… go and USE it  a LOT!

Thanks very much for your opinions.

I like Digital Tutors products, so i will try it and use it as much as possible.

Cheers!

this 2.5d application?

Seems that is also a 3D apllication

Play all the animations here will be a good introduction to Zb

What confuses a lot is the fact that a lot of options regarding a certain task are somewhat spread across the tabs. It takes a moment or two to tie those together. Once you got it then it even makes sense. Till then you can become rather frustrated. One sample to illustrate that:

You Z-add ‘stuff’. It’s coars and you wish to smooth it. You select the shift button and the smooth circle color (blue) shows up. You ‘hit’ the model with it. And ARGHHHHHHH all is flat in a jiffy. Now… try to find the strength slider for that… You have to go to the transform tab, slect the SMOOTH brush. THEN the Intensity slider is setting the smooth intensity. Once you set it, it stays at that value and you can switch back to the other brush you used.

One would expect that if you hit the shift key, the intensity slider also becomes the intensity slider of the smoothing brush… Not so in ZBrush. It is filled with little interface quirks. The main taks in getting familliar is to incorporate those little gem’s. Then… the deisgn emerges and you can operate it effectively.

Good luck!

PS: And don’t forget. A puppy is shot, a kitten is drowned, and another ogre is model’d for every post in the wrong forum. So take care and read the stickies before you post!

Yes, i noticed that man… That´s why Zbrush is a revolutionary tool and its interface is a different from others applications we usually use.

Thanks again… Cheers!

One cheap Solution which i would recommend for getting quicly up to speed with teh program is to purchase the DVD ‘Get into ZBrus’ by Glen Southern of Kurv Studios… Its a brilliant DVD that doesnt beat around the bush and shows you by example the program and its interface… I personally bought my own copy a few months ago and was a 20 pounds investment, which i think is great value for money… I hope thats of any help
