Surface Meshes made in rhino separate when divided

Hi. I am a newbie in teh z brush thing… But it seems amazing so far. Hope I can get to grips with it.

I have a problem I keep running into.
I model some things in Rhino and export as OBJ files. I find that once they are imported and I try to divide the geometry the surfaces shrink and separate - looking really odd, basically its is as though all the seams are not properly joined. PLease see screen grabs.
Has anyone ever come across this?
I was thinking to unify the skin, but that only works sometimes when I add a lot of smoothing, and then I lose the sharp edges I need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Like I said. I am a newbie so please I hope its simple.

Thanks
Michael

Hello, i think that you need off the button smooth and after this subdivide it.

this too:

Thanks - Looks like other people have the same problem. Thanks for the help

Use Rhino 5Beta and in the obj - Export Dialog choose "Welded.

I dont know much about rhino. But I DO know polys. It looks to me that your verts are not welded, or that is to say your face are all separate. You need to combine/merge/weld all the verts on your object so that it is one solid mesh. Also make sure your normals are facing the correct way before export in rhino.

Also under tool/display properties hit double sided.

Be sure to import your mesh via the mesh sub-palette at the BOTTOM of the tools palette (right above EXPORT). (In other words don’t import from the top part of the tools palette).

Set the weld slider all the way to the right and import from the button below. You can also play with the MRG button (merge), but I had a mesh with similar problems and just importing from this sub-palette setting weld all the way to the right was the fix for me.

Thanks guys, that is all really useful. I will try out all of the above. I really would like to get this to work other wise I will need to learn Maya and that seems v complex.

I will let you know how I get on.
