subdivision history ptoblem

I checked the online docs and didnt find anything that answered this. Sometimes when I am at say… subdivision level 3 and I want to add another level (3 being the highest level at this moment) I click divide and I get the message
a 3d mesh may be partially modified only while the lowest subdivision level is active… try deleting subdivision history.
Where is subdivision history? Dos this mean to delete my lower levels? I cannot do this because I want to eventually extract a displacment map…
what does this mean? If I switch to the lowest onlt the areas I was just working on will subdivide… what have I done here?

thanks,

Scott

What is happening is that you have the mesh partially masked or partially hidden when you press the Divide button. This tells ZBrush to only divide the unmasked or visible parts of the mesh. You can only divide a portion of the mesh when you’re on the lowest subdivision level. On any other level, you must divide the entire mesh.

The subdivision history is merely the various subdivision levels, or rather the lower subdivision levels. If currently viewing subd lvl 3 the history lies in subd lvl 1 and 2.

If a tool is partially visible or has a mask applied you must be at subd lvl 1 in order to divide as zbrush needs to propagate the division from subdivision level 1 and upward.

To add further subdivision levels go to the highest subd lvl, make sure no mask is applied and the tool is fully visible, and press divide.

Thanks! :+1: for the clue…I went to the lowest degree(level 1) and clicked ctrl+d!!as there is less possibility of polygons being hidden it got sub divided automatically to level 6(I had 5 levels before hand!!)…and voila!!it worked  :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I had the same problem and did the same thing: subdivided at level 1. What happened to me is, it discarded level one, and made 2 level 1. It then added a higher subdivision at the end. So the result was as if I had deleted the first subdivision level, and then added a new one. It also left a hole where the hidden area was.

Turns out I had a portion of the mesh hidden. So, I reloaded the file, made sure nothing was hidden with shift-control mouse drag, and then was able to subdivide at the highest level.

Basically, make sure nothing is masked AND nothing is hidden, before you subdivide.
