strange lines in normal map

Hi everyone,

I made this tillable texture of a stonewall using sub tools that I have made in Zbrush (using brushes, surface noise and spot light for texturing) I placed each sub tool onto the 2.5D canvas.

The problem I am having, is after I paint a normal material over the canvas (using the simpleBrush and drag the NormalRGBMat across the canvas) if you look close up at the stones you will see strange lines.
The lines are not present on any other materials and are still present after a best render with default settings.

Close up and UDK screen gab.

Addition document details
Width 2048
Height 1024
All render settings default
Stones are sculptured using brushes/surface noise

Thanks

Maybe it’s just the result of shrinking the images, but I’m just seeing rocks in all images with nothing jumping out to my eyes, even inside the circled areas.

Regardless, here’s a possible checklist of possible things to look for:

  1. Since you mentioned using default settings, make sure to turn off certain properties like shadows
  2. Check your aliasing settings in zbrush.
  3. Make sure the exported normal map is normalized
  4. Make sure the map is using the correct compression settings in UDK (and possibly gamma settings)
  5. Perhaps unrelated, but if you’re exporting seamless maps from zbrush you may need to use this at some point in the future, if you aren’t already : http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?94752-Useful-small-ZScripts-and-Macros-for-ZBrush-4-amp-4R3&p=848052#post848052

Yes, I can’t see the errors you’re talking about either but you can get horizontal and vertical lines when trying to export tileable textures from ZBrush; the plugin Cryrid points you to solves the issue. (Thanks Cryrid  )

Hi
If you look at one of the bricks inside of the red circle, you should see the lines (looks like a human thumb print), sorry I didn’t screen grab it closer up.
Anyway I sorted the issue, by doubling the resolution of my document, clear the canvas and place stones onto the canvas.
I also change antialiasing to 100 which improved the edges and got rid of the lines.

Cheers guys
