Sensable Technologies Clay tools

Okay everybody,

who knows the deal with Sensable Technologie’s Clay Tools?

http://www.sensable.com/products/Maya/index.asp

Is this for real? Whats the catch? If this thing works like it looks like it does, why didn’t you tell me about it? Hmmmm?@@!!!

Also, why haven’t I heard of any major studios using it? Weta has Mudboxx, everybody else has Z-brush, so there must be something I’m not understanding here, it looks great…Perhaps it doesn’t handle the amount of polys as zbrush, but you could always just finish the details off in zbrush if thats the case…I know the haptic device requirement is sort of an expensive requirement, that must be whats holding this software from reaching the masses, yet that doesn’t explain why the major fx studios haven’t been using it…

You may be able to get more feedback about Maya-plugin by posting the question in a forum dedicated to Maya users:)

hey Aurick,

I was just interested in hearing anyone’s feedback that may have used the thing, and what the pros and cons are; I post on this forum because I figure this is a package that would attract the same crowd that uses Zbrush…Also I posted on a few forums in order to get some kind of feedback…but I do apologize, actually it was quite rude of me to do that come to think of it; I got a bit excited and didn’t consider how this forum would recieve the post. If you feel the need to delete the post I’ll totally understand, my apologies…

Very cool programm, but very similar toi zbrush.

Something I specially like is the abitly to add clay, even if you can do something similar on zbrush, it seeem a bit less clean.

Also siper cool is the fact to use besier curve to mask/deform you object…
That something I would love to have in zbrush. But since Zappling, I used photoshop bezier to create nice curved masks.

Nice sculpting tutorials indeed!

will prolly cost a fortune with hardware and such… i think i have seen a 3d hand to model once from this company…

A cg modeller, a sculptor and myself went to a studio that had several setup (they mainly did toy design and product mockups), came away dissapointed. All felt very slow and laggy, despite them running pretty tricked out machines. This was about 2 years ago, maybe its improved since then. But there was nothing about the interface that made us say ‘damnit, I MUST have this tool’.

Didn’t someone on this fourm buy a sensable arm at siggraph last year? They were gonna look into writing a driver for zbrush, but never heard from them after that.

In terms of vfx work, I read zack petroc used one for sky captain, but it seems he made the switch to zbrush.
