Sculpting folds in cloth... how do you do it?

This is my 2nd attempt to create a character in Maya and Zbrush. I’ve been working on folds in cloth, but I can’t seem to get it to look quite right. I’m not even sure why it doesn’t look right.

I did this all with the standard, smooth, and pinch brushes, going over it again and again. I welcome criticism for improving the folds, or any alternative techniques.

Cloth is tricky. Period.

If you’re not sure why it doesn’t look right, then you probably need to spend some time really looking closely at how cloth falls in the real world. In fact, many artists will dress a model the same way that they want their character to be, and photograph that for reference.

One thing that can help with sculpting cloth is to use the Gravity modifier in the Brush palette.

Find photos of different types of cloth - curtains, denim pants, silk fabric, wool coats. Then, as an exercise, try recreating those images in ZBrush. It’s all about having good reference material.
