Resizing multiple subtools.... Oh the humanity!

Hya everyone!
Hya ZBer!!!

Heres what I want to do and not have a gigantic explosion:

I want to resize more than one subtool at once, so for example if I make a person and they have a shirt as a sub tool I want to make them both larger at the same time and have the shirt still not only fit but be in the correct place, not somewhere inside the bellybutton or something.
I actually want to do this to a lot of things at once but I’m happy to start with two for now.

Is this even possible?
Or is this what people mean when asking for subtool grouping and folders and all that fun stuff?

EDIT: Would using polygroups work if I’m working with Dynamesh? If so how?

Cheers!
Mealea

Ok…
I figured it out (sort of).
First I turned off Dynamesh on all tools.
Then used Merge Down to turn everything into one object.
Then I used Size in the deformation pallet to scale everything way up (and got lucky and didn’t crash!).
Then I used Group Split to take it apart again into subtools.
Some of the subtools had PolyGroups of their own but those I simply merged again.

However…

What I wanted to do was give my self more polygons because I’m trying to learn to do hands (this is NOT going well).
I have noticed (with help from something ZBer told someone else) that with dynamesh you can scale something up and get more polygons with out increasing the Dynamesh resolution but this did not work in this case and I suspect that its because I scaled thing that were not dynamesh…

Um…
How do I do this?

mumble…

Has anyone ever noticed that hands are a pain in the ass? Its amazing.

Hi Mealea,

Being able to group subtools would be of such great benefit. I look forward to the day when Pixologic will incorporate this function. For now, you have several options.

  1. There is Transpose Master, but I didn’t always find it as reliable or easy to work with as I would have liked.

  2. If each subtool has a different polygroup and the same amount of subdivision levels, you could merge those subtools, do your transformations and then do a Groups Split to seperate them again when done.

  3. At the bottom of the Deformation subpalette are two buttons called ‘Repeat To Active’ and ‘Repeat To Other’. Put your cursor over each button and hold down Ctrl for an explanation of what each does. These can be a little tricky though. In order to use those buttons, you have to use the Deformation sliders but you have to use the ‘Repeat To Active’ or ‘Repeat To Other’ buttons after ever adjustment to a slider. If you move a slider twice (or enter numerical values), they will only apply the action to the last adjustment.

As to the Dynamesh thing, just use that for getting the general shape then turn Dynamesh off and increase the subdivisions for finer detail.

GRIN!
Hya Zber!

Transpose (scale) is definitely out, it just distorts stuff at random usually and I stopped fighting it a long time ago.

For #2 that is what I did, but interestingly when I turn the one I’m after (the body in this case) back into dynamesh I dont get more polygons, this is odd because I do if I scale things as dynamesh and then hit add.
This I think answers my question though I got sidetracked by the discovery that not only does Sculptris and Dynamesh work with GoZ now but they are working well, I have the attention span of a gnat…

Anyhow I do know that Dynamesh is mainly for making rough sculpts, but having discovered your trick of making things larger I thought I could use that as a sort of sneaky work around…
The thing is I suck at anatomy and being able to do large changes to a dynamesh rather then having to start over with a normal mesh would be nice (especially with hands, hands are a nightmare) and as I said above I think I know how now but need to test it.

As for ‘Repeat To Active’ and ‘Repeat To Other’ I am going to have a look at that as I never actually understood what it was doing, I was only able to see the video for that once and it went right over my head but I think your description cleared it up some what I think, I need to try that stuff out.

This is fun, there are so many ways of doing the same thing and so many ways of getting sidetracked…

Ok off I go to see what happens!
Thanks ZBer!
