Problem with canvas size

Hi everyone! Nice to find a place like this! I had some trouble with my zbrush, in that I tried this, #AskZBrush: “Can I enlarge the sculpting area in the interface?” – Pixologic : ZBrushLIVE In order to get more screen real estate. Unfortunately, I am running the soft on a laptop, and it overheats when I do this. So, I tried to get the screen small again, like so, https://polycount.com/discussion/175708/zbrush-document-size I even deleted startupdocument.zbr and on bootup it works, but here’s the thing, when I reopen a file later, it goes back to the larger screen, and I cant work like that. Thanks for reading, cheers!

Hi @tracker05!

A few notes here.

  1. To save a canvas starting size, you need to use the Document > “Save As Startup doc” function. This will make it so that Zbrush boots up with the canvas at that size.

  2. Saving a .ZPR (Project files saved through the File > Save As/Open action) also saves document settings independently of your startup settings. It will load with whatever canvas size it was saved with. If you want to change the canvas size in a saved .zpr file, you must save it after changing the size in that file.

  3. If you just want to save a tool, and not any canvas settings, you can save it as a .ztl (tool) file through the Tool > Save As function. Understand the different things saved with different file types here.

Do these address your issue?

Hi , thanks very much for your reply! As for the 1st point, that does work, and Ive tried it. The 2nd point is what doesn’t work for me, as when I reopen a file, the sculpting area goes back to the largest possible one, taking account the screen. 3rd, I don’t really save as tool. I want to thank you for the info, but in my case, it’s some kind of glitch maybe? For now what I do is click at the bottom, tutorial view, so this shrinks the screen. Many thanks.

Edit: For people who have problem with (some) hp laptops, this worked for me!
“And do something else to reduce the temperature a little bit of your CPU.
Go to Power Settings, Change Plan Settings, Change Advanced Power Settings.
Then, Processor Power State, then Maximum Processor State, It’ll be on 100% probably. Knock it down to about 90%. I reduced the temperature to 17 degrees, with no noticeable drop in performance.”

Yes, as I mentioned above the file will open at whatever size the canvas was when it was saved. You have to save that particular file with the new canvas size. It will then re-open at that size. Is this not what is happening?

The starting document size that Zbrush opens with, is a separate thing from the canvas size in a saved project file. The latter will override the former.

To clarify, I am speaking about the document canvas size, the dimensions of which are set with a width and height slider in the Document menu, because that is what the original video you linked to refers to. If you mean something else, please post a screenshot of your interface that illustrates the issue.

Hi! I edited my previous post with info regarding hp laptops.
Yes, we are speaking about the same thing, my zbrush I guess really liked the larger canvas size, who knows!
I guess its a very minor thing, I mean everyone uses the larger canvas, its far more comfortable, the problem was in my laptop, I believe. Thanks very much for the help!
