I installed zBrush 2 trial onto my computer desktop, (windows XP, 1gig, etc doesnt really matter here) without any shortcuts. I wanted to move it to my usb 2.0 drive, to make it sort-of semiportable, which has worked for other applications.
So then, after copying and pasting the zbrush files, I run zbrush from this 256 MB usb drive (Sandisk: after adding the zbrush files, it had 20 MB of space left) from my own computer and it gives me this incomplete file write error. The debugger says access violation, but i doubt it was the registry, because the .exe usually writes to current_user on start up, and only needs to access local_machine, not vice-versa (since the registry in local machine shouldnt have changed)…I think. And even more confusing, I couldnt find any zBrush keys in the registry other than for the uninstaller!
So Im really stuck. If anybody has any ideas how to make zBrush portable, Id be really grateful.
P.S. Before I moved it, Zbrush worked fine from my desktop
ZBrush is not portable between machines. The registration is linked to several elements unique to a particular machine. Moving it to another machine – even via a USB drive that it’s installed on – will not work.

It’s perhaps worth mentioning that if you buy ZBrush the license allows you to install two copies, as long as they are the same operating system and you only use one at a time. This would mean you could have one on your laptop and one on your desktop.
Wow! That’s good to know. I Keep thinking about getting one of those Tablet laptops that would allow me to draw on the screen. So you are saying that I could have a copy of ZBrush on my Desktop PC and a Tablet. WOW!

I use a tablet pc with Z and it works wonderfully. If you have one, I highly recommend it (just do yourself a favor and get a USB keyboard for the shortcuts).
