poly groups, smoothing issue

Hi

I imported an obj file to zbrush. the file had existing poly groups, unfortunately even though these are not separated as sub tools at the moment, when I smooth over the seems between the areas they separate my mesh!

any ideas why or how to stop it?

you can see in this image how the extracted area forming the clothing has split when I smoothed it. it does the same on areas that arnt extractions too.

thanks

that part of the object isn’t connected

do a polygroup auto group and see what colors they come up as.

yes they are separate poly groups, but when I have created a poly group in zbrush it dosent separate at the join?

is there a way in zbrush to join the polygroups so they dont split up like this?

thanks

there is…but it is very cumbersome.

you have to export out the object with the UV’s sitting ontop of one another. then you have to reimport that object with the weld options turned on in the tool>import panel

You can use the pinch brush on the two points you want welded so you make sure they are sitting on top of each other.

(10x faster in a 3d modeling app though)

cheers fo that. Ill try it.

I have blender, so if I could find out how to weld verticies in that it would help, either way I dont think theres an easy fix.

thanks anyway.

Rather than welding, you can press Tool>Geometry>Crease before you divide the model. This changes the way the current SubTool’s edges smooth, so that they don’t pull apart.

you hero you… that just solved the issue completely!

nice one
