Photoshop converts 16 bit to 8 bit images(???)

Photoshop converts 16 bit to 8 bit images

Hey guys,
I was wondering why Photoshop is converting 16 bit to 8 bit images? How do I stop this?
Also how can I tell how many channels an image is using, is the amount of channels related to image size(1k,2k,etc) or format (gif, jpeg, etc).
Any help is apreeicated.

If your version of Photoshop is not CS, it does not support 16-bit images. If it is CS, then it shouldn’t be changing the color depth – although you do need to make sure that automatic color management is turned off.

The Images I’ve been bringing into PS 7 are jpeg’s And I understand thAT jpeg doesn’t support 16 bit channel. Still even when I change the mode from 8 bit to 16 bit PS7 won’t let anyn tool edit the converted image. (???) This has never happen to me or I haven’t noticed before. You must be right! But I thought PS dosen’t support 32 bit images not 16 bit, cause why are you allowed to to change the mode from 8bit to 16 bit. image>mode>8bit/16bit.
???

See if your original file is a psd file then there wont be much problem, but if its alredy jpeg then it cannot convert into 16 bit.

More over p7 had problems with 16 bit image mode. try upgarding your software.

I’ve been able to convert the jpeg file to 16 bit, but I just can’t edit it after the fact. At work the work flow works find, this leads me to believe that there’s something wrong with the software.

Has anyone else experienced this before?

BTW. What upgrade for PS7 are you talking about?

upgrading means upgarde to next version cs or cs 2

ONE MOre important thing -

When you work in 16 bit mode many options will get disabled like many filters wont work etc and this is same for all versions .( I cant say if graphic card upgrade can help to solve this prob or not, I have 64 mb vram still cant work in 16 bit mode))

Always work in 8 mode complete you final pic then conevrt into 16 bit.

I think that will solve your probs

Oh this upgrade.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1 update

I have PS 7 at work and have imported a 8bit .tga file ( granted not .jpg ) then converted it to 16 bit and some not all of the Filters ( noise, blur, sharpen, stylize and other )work. Certainly the tools eg. brush, Dodge stamp etc work fine. Not at home thou. Hopefully this upgrade fixes the problem. I’ll keep you posted.

That wont help when it comes to tool part.

check this and you will know exactly what to do-

One of the primary end-user benefits of using 8-bit images over 16-bit images is that Photoshop offers more tools, and therefore has more capabilities for adjusting and manipulating, 8-bit images. The 16-bit mode offers a very limited set of tools. 8-bit files are also smaller and take up less disk space. Because more Photoshop options are available in the 8-bit mode, this makes the workflow more efficient.

16 bit means less tools

Thanks for the information. And I don’t debate weather 16bit is better then 8bit.My point is there’s a discrepancy between the PS7 version at home and work. ie. an image that gets converted to 16bit from 8bit nullifies all the tool as appose to some of the tools.
I’ve noticed a degradation of the image ( stepping ) once imports the image and makes it 8bit. And that really is the problem and that’s why I want to use more channels.

Can you tell me why Zbrush exports tiff s as 32bits?

all the tools meaning which ones ?

name them so that I can check in my p7 ?

Meanwhile I dont export in tiff format from zbrush as I dont go for printing that much.

Why not export it as psd or bmp then try? it might help.

These tools.

I’m not printing.

Yep sorry I missed them.

They never work with 16 bit.

neither in p6 nor p7 or cs or cs2.

So surely no problem in your software or pc.

Photoshop is just like that only. cant help it. .

If you not going for print, export as psd from zbrush .

Thanks for the help.
