Paramite

I’m new to ZBrush and decided to make a Paramite (that’s one of the monsters in the Oddworld-universe) as one of my first works with this pretty awesome program.

So far i’m still playing around with the standard sculpting tool but i hope i’ll
get into detailing with Projection Master soon.

please do, I love oddworld. I would really like to see this finished.

I’m not familiar with Oddworld, but that is a very cool model. Everytime I see something like this, I am just more amazed with ZBrush. And I’ve been using it for 5 years. This is your first post, but I’m assuming you have some other background in modelling? How do you like the flow in ZB compared to other applications you’ve used?

Oddworld inhabitants artwork is awesome, ill follow this progress, and btw NICE LIKENESS to a paramite!:+1: C+C-wise, Id exaggerate the fingers because its alot like a hand with crab legs whioch gives it alot of its sinister character. Might join in and do a SCRAB :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the kind comments and yes Slosh, i do have some modelling background: I’m using Blender since a few years and i’m also a bit familiar with real sculpting.
The workflow in ZBrush… hm… as usual it’s really different compared to all the other applications that I’ve tried before but I made this experience with absolutely every program so it just took some time to get into it. Even though I’m starting to get along with this by now i don’t really like the tool-orientated system. It brings in some complexity that might not have been neccessary but maybe I’ll get it’s deeper reasons by the time. (So far it’s mostly the performance issue that I can think of). It’s just a bit annoying that you have to watch out not to drop your current tool by mistake or something like this and that you aren’t able to easily combine different objects/tools like placing eyeballs that don’t get affected by the sculpting. (It is possible to do that but there are easier and more comfortable ways…)

I’ve only scratched the surface of what this program is capable of so far but I’m working on this project to change that and I’m hoping to succeed.

So well, back to sculping now and you might see more 3D-realizations of those great Oddworld inhabitants artworks by me because I’m currently working on a project related to this universe.

Cool…

You must have drank some Aqua-Bounce before doing this…

Awesome model! I’m just learning this program as well. Did you start with a base mesh or did you use zspheres?

yeaaah! I love oddworld, but only abe’s adventures!
paramites are not my favorite creatures but I’ll follow this thread with attention!

Yeah, I bought a new fridge to store all those creativity drinks.

@mrwilt:
I’ve made a simple basemesh in Blender and assigned some polygroups to it there, since i wasn’t getting along with ZSpheres at all…

@derkomai:
Same here. The first 2(D) games are absolutely great.

Anyways, time for an update:

I have no idea how I will bring all the tiny skin details on the model because I’m already running out of polygons again. Most likely I will try a mixture of texture and geometry, or just bring it to over 8mil polygons and see what i can do then…

If you wonder why it party looks a bit weird in the middle: This will become a realtime model so i have to work with symmetry in order to be able to get a good amount of detail in the pretty small texture maps. I will change some of those parts in the future though.

I mostly finished the basic geometry by now and started adding a few details:

And thx for the nice Material, KrakenCMT

im liking the way its coming along, keep it up

No problem, frigi! You got a great model going there!

cool!!!

This is pretty amazing! The wrinkles and folds are very realistic. Keep up the great work. I can see this creature in the next Silent Hill.

Time for another little Update!

I spent some more time on the skin detail and now reached a point where I say for what I actually made it for (creating a normalmap for a lowpoly model with about 1.3k tris) this is enough.

To archieve this look I first added a varying amount of different sized pores depending on the region and underlying muscle structure. Afterwards i put a few folds with a cell structure over it to get a basic feeling of where the skin is “acting” in which way. To finish it I just pulled out some rougher structures in some places to give it an accurately visible amount of detail even with only a small normalmap applied to the lowpoly mesh.

I still have a question though:
Is it possible to project a colormap that was originally created on a highres mesh to another lowres model then just the first subdivision level of the detailed version? (As I did it with the geometry information to create the normalmap for a newly created lowpoly model.)

I hope you guys can help me a bit with that so I can finally start texturing, which I even don’t like if there are no technical problems at all.

Finally, the images:

just cool… should I say perfect?

Sligs, Slogs and Paramites. You’ve done Abe proud.

…good to eat?
Cool modeling

Slashxu:  Do you even know what game the paramite is from? :frowning: This paramite is much older than Silent Hill.

The paramite was always my favourite Oddworld creature. crick crick

I notice that the sizes of the lateral mouth-claws are slightly smaller than they were in Abe’s Exodus, but that’s your creative license, I suppose. Great stuff!

Pieisgood: Relax, slashxu was just saying that it looked like something from Silent Hill. No need to take umbrage on behalf of Oddworld. :stuck_out_tongue:
