Is there a way to paint a transparent color on a plane3d?
Pilou
The part I’m painting transparent, I want to show thru.
You need to have your plane on a separate layer and also turn of Flatten in the Render menu. Then paint with a material that has a Transparency slider such as GelShader, adjusting the slider to suit.
Excellent thanks, that’s what I needed.
can I then some how bake the material as a texture for rendering in another program. I just want to paint transparency in Zbrush and render in maya.
The above method only works in ZBrush and can’t be baked into a texture. If you want to have transparency in another program you will have to paint a transparency map in ZBrush [a grayscale texture map showing the areas you want to be transparent, black for 100% transparent] and then apply it in the appropriate shader channel in the other program.
I thought so, thats what Ive been doing. But I was hoping there was a magic Material, like the bump map viewer Material that could give me a preview… will this be possible in 2.5?
There is a way you might try. Projection Master sometimes doesn’t like more than one layer so be sure to experiment with this method first and back up any textures by exporting them.
Create a background that will give you something to see through the transparency. Then create a new layer and switch off Flatten in the Render palette.
Select your model and select the Basic Material and adjust the Transparency slider in the Material Modifiers to about -80. Draw your model on the canvas. You should be able to see the background through it.
Drop your model in Projection Master. Using the RGB slider to adjust the degree of transparency, paint on your model. You can use color if you want.
Pick up the model. You should be able to see your transparent texture on your model.
To use your texture in another program: if you painted in grayscale then you may need to invert the texture so that the correct areas appear transparent. If you painted in color, duplicate your texture and then desaturate it before inverting.
HTH,
Thank you kind sir. Im going to experiment with this method you shared… I will do a quick tutorial if it works well. I find the possibility really exciting! I am giving modo a wirl for there bump/normal map painting and transparency painting. Modo is not friendly with even medium poly counts… but it works, I must admit painting in modo feels good. But modeling… Zbrush all the way baby! Maybe the painting tools will improve-I would love to see PM not needed anymore.
