Overwatch Fan Art - Tracer

Hey guys!

I wanted to share with you my Overwatch fan art:)

I created Tracer entirely in Zbrush. She’s super high poly at the moment but I’m planning to do retopology, UV Mapping and reprojecting the details back down.

I would really love all critiques as well as advice for what you guys would recommend for retopologizing from a high res mesh in Zbrush. I’m not too familiar with the best approaches when starting with a high res Zbrush sculpt. I spent tonight fiddling with Zremesher, the Topology Brush, and ZModeler. I also considered popping open Maya as well. I was curious what you guys would recommend.

I made a lot of adjustments to the model and did some new renders in Keyshot  Still have more work to do but figured I would share progress

Hi there,

The proportions are good. Still in progress so I won’t say anything as you may know you need to iterate and tackle down the details

Carry on!!!

Hey AirOne,

Thanks!

Yeah it’s still a work in progress, but I’d love to hear what you have to say! Any feedback helps and I would really appreciate it

Ok then… your head feels off to me and would maybe need some adjustments. I’m not feeling the structure (bones) behind. In third quarter view, you are supposed to feel the 5 bumps I’m showing you. Not sure it will apply completely with Tracer as she is semi-cartoon but you should feel it a little I guess.

Also the tip of your nose is a bit too high, try to push it down a little (even if it looks like the ref is going that way, something is off)

There is something about the mouth but can not say what it is yet :frowning:

For the hair, try to sculpt a clean curve all around each mass you got

Thanks for the feedback Air0ne

For better comparison here’s an image without the goggles. I was trying to reference the in game model as best as I could.

I’ll definitely work on those fixes though. The mouth especially needs some work. I didn’t do a good job laying out wireframes and keeping a low subdivision levels so it’s a bit screwy to sculpt in that area.

I’m planning to do a retopo and probably have a facial expression for the final version of her as well so these will be helpful things to adapt when I get there

The zoom help a lot. You have done great adjustments comparing with the first version

Here are some elements that would need some adjustments. Try to keep a spike effect for your hair and clean curves. Be careful about your mechanic elements, they look sometimes too soft

Can’t wait to see the next version

Hey Air0ne! Sorry for the delay. Finally got around to your feedback  Here’s some updated shots of Tracer. I experimented a little bit with creating a facial expression and posing her. I’d like to do a full body pose for the final version

Great work. I dont know if you plan likeness of the character the more accurate you can, but I think you could improve the likeness of the face. You copuld refine the nose to match better. Tracer as a specific nose with a hard line in it you currently miss.

And here eyes doesnt have the characteristic eyelashes. Match those two elements and you should be near perfection

Thanks Scote! I’m going to go back and make the adjustments you suggested  I can’t believe all this time I didnt even think about eyelashes! Great point. I believe once I make a few more face modifications I will be satisfied with the model

I’m still planning to add the eyelashes you mentioned. However I updated the eyebrows, did some restructuring of the nose, and a bit of the mouth and jawline. I also emphasized the freckles a bit more  Old one is on the bottom for reference.

Hi George,

Better buddy. If you don’t mind, could you do a front face Screenshot of your model with and without the google? I would like to check something and maybe help you

Sure thing Air0ne! Any help is appreciated! Also I’m gonna be experimenting a bit with the hair to try and get it a bit more planar and sharper looking like you mentioned earlier. Hopefully it works out well lol

Hi George,

I won’t point out exactly what’s wrong. I want you to do it as it’s a good exercise. Do not go to much in details, only overall shapes should be analysed first

Untitled-1.jpg

The two things that stand out the most to me are the chin being too thin/pointy and same with the nose. Also the ears are a bit larger on mine. I can adjust those. The shape of the eyes are a little different as well but I think I’m okay with that one.

For me, the eye need an adjustment (the almond shape is not completely respected in your side), as well as the mouth (too thin) and the nose (too small)
The shape of the head need to be rounder I guess but it depends of the head orientation (if we check other references, we can see that your chin is not that bad)

Likeness are very hard to achieve. Me too I struggle with that

Okay  I have so far made the nose a bit bigger and rounded out the chin just a teeeeny bit. I’m working on cleaning up the hair a bit and then I will also address the ears, the eye shape and mouth as you have mentioned. I’m really happy with the progress it has been making. I think after those fixes I will call the likeness close enough unless anyone here sees anything huge

Okay I’m officially calling the head done! Otherwise I will be sitting and tweaking it forever haha. I’m now finally going to start working on the full body pose
