Oni Mask

Hi Guys, I wanted to share a fun project that I created during these crazy times of quarantine. I figured if I was going to have to go out to shop for essentials, I was going to do it in my style. So I designed this mask to fit on top of my disposable face mask.

I started with a quick low rez iphone scan to get scale and fitment to my face. I wanted something a bit scary to keep people away from me so I went with something inspired by a Samurai Oni mask. Oni masks are a symbol of protection for those who believe in the spiritual world.!

I brought the scan into Zbrush and started designing. I created simple primitives to block out the shape around my mouth. Then I used my Oni reference to shape out my design.

Once the sculpt was complete I took the model into Substance Painter to do a quick prototype of the potential paint job.

Then I went back to zbush to prep for 3d printing. Using live boolean I was able to quickly set up the model to print. 40 hours later the 2 part print was ready for fusing into one piece. Adding keys made it really easy to assemble and finalize.

At this point I can just wear the current 3d print. After posting it on social media, I received lots of interest in purchasing one, so I decided to create a mold to try to make copies. Here is a photo of the copies and paint job of the final.
