Is it possible to do an Oil Painting effect in Zbrush? I’ve seen it done in Deep Paint…where if you do a stroke and another on top of it, the “paint” actually mixes(and changes hue if another colour paint is used) and casts a shadow.
Hi Ken
I don’t know what is an oil Painting effect but as you see at this forum an extrem variety of effect is possible with the different sort of textures, brush, material etc…
You will find certainly your wish with some tests Especialy the Smudger tool on an appropriate material

Hi!
Yeah…I forgot all about the smudge tool…it provides the right effect in a way. Although, you have to have the paint already laid out to use it…so it’s less intuative. But as always in zbrush, there is always a way…it’s just a matter of discovering it.
Hi
The smudge brush can apply color+depth without smudging (as a SimpleBrush) and it can also apply color while you ‘smudge’.
To use the smudge brush as a SimpleBrush simply press the CONTROL key while ‘smudging’.
To apply the the currently selected color while smudging, set the smudge tool modifier “Color Blend” to value larger than Zero.
You may also want to experiment with the “Retain Center” mode.
Hope this helps,

wow! Will the tools never end! This is fantastic! I’ll never live long enough to find all the good things about zbrush!!
Animation
wow that’s a neat animation EZ!
I like changing the picking mode in the picker menu. “Continuous color” blends nicely between colors while using the regular brush.
Here’s my attempt at an oil painting. I think it’s more like water though!
I would like to see Oil painting style developed more…

These are really nice! Love the flower, Jay!
I like flowers a lot! In my early days on the forum I painted a lot of flowers using all types of techniques. It is nice to see a new interest in flowers.
I don’t know if it’s acceptable to drudge up an old painting, but here is one I did during testing phase, just prior to the release of 1.5. I think one can achieve an oil paint or acrylic paint look quite effectively with zbrush. For this image, I used only simple brush, and single layer brush to lay down the color, using zadd on, set at a low intensity. Then, using various highlighters, intensity brush, noise, etc, I was able to achieve a very textured look. Hope this helps to answer your questions a bit.
Nice image Slosh I like that effect. I did one that had a similar effect in April called Coconut Hill.

That’s the look Slosh! Cheers. I’m just curious…is that a bird on the fence? If so…an owl?
This picture was done in the same fashion as I do some of my abstractish oil paintings. The technique I used to achieve the colour blending was to us the method Aurick suggested on the background, and the flowers & leaves were done entirely with the snakehook brush. I find it naturally blends colours, beginning with the base colour already on the canvas and then choosing either a darker or lighter colour to use with the snake hook brush. It picks up both colours and blends them.

Yes, Ken, that is a bird! Not much of one, I have to admit, but I was attempting to create something for DeeVee, and since I know he has a love for birds, I put one in the pic. It’s supposed to be a crane, although I daresay I might do a better job now than I did back then.
“On the Gender of Angels and Red Vegetables”
I was once told this looked like an oil painting. I myself aren’t so sure.
but anyway, the only technique I used was patience, smudging in SMALL strokes, and changing brush size often. Oh, and also, don’t use ColorEnhancer brush, choose a bright or dark color yourself, from the picker, and paint it on.
I hope this helps
Very nice piece, Christos, and thanks for explaining your technique.
