Noob: tools > layers > can't select 3D layer?

Hi everybody- I’ve been learning Zbrush and trying to get used to it’s interface.

One thing that has totally stumped me however- the layer I was working on for my zTool, has greyed out, and now I cannot select it to work with it!
I’m not sure what I’ve done.
-Haven’t subdivided the model
-Tried switching SDiv levels, but it stays greyed out.

Help would be appreciated! It is a must to have the sculpting on different layers, so one can mix the final product.

Layers are only available at the subdivision level for which they were created. If you’ve created a layer at one level, you won’t be able to create one at any other level until you turn off the existing one. Then you’ll need to turn off the new one before you can work with the original again.

If layers aren’t available at any subdivision level, the most likely answer is that you created a layer and then partially divided one of the other levels. The only other thing I can think of would be if your model is a parametric object that hasn’t yet been converted to a Polymesh, but that doesn’t make sense because then the Layer palette wouldn’t even be available.

What you can do to get the layers back again would be to go to level 1 and export it as an OBJ. Select another model and import your OBJ again. Now append it to your original mesh, which you should take back to the max level. Select the low-res version, divide it to match the high-res version, then use Tool>SubTool>Project All to copy the details across.
