I don’t have the option to increase the memory under the Mem tab in preferences. It’s just not there. I don’t wish to reinstall for sake of plug-ins. any recommendations? I can’t deal with this running so slow.
That setting has been removed. The truth of the matter is that your virtual memory has been managed by ZBrush automatically for many, many versions now. ZBrush always uses as much RAM as it needs and only reverts to virtual memory when it has to.
The problem was that people tended to use the Compact Mem setting incorrectly. The tendency was to set the slider higher, thinking that this would improve performance. But since the slider was already automatically set at what ZBrush determined would be the best setting, cranking it higher actually forced ZBrush to use RAM even when virtual memory would have been better. The correct way to use the slider was actually to go lower, telling ZBrush to use less RAM in order to ensure that other apps that you had running in the background would still be able to function correctly and not start competing with ZBrush.
If ZBrush is performing slowly it is not because the Compact Mem setting has been removed. The only time Compact Mem ever has a visible effect on performance is when you have to pause while ZBrush performs that operation. Actual sculpting performance is a function of CPU rather than memory.
Alright, thank you for the quick response. I must have something else going on, everything was fine just yesterday. But yeah, thanks again for the explanation.
