new computer ???

I have an old dell computer a precision 670. its about 12yrs old. and I had maxed it out, about 3 yrs ago
but like all things, its starting lag and slow down. So, I am looking to get a new computer. (pc) I am looking for suggestions on a new one. I have about 1500 to spend on it.
I have zb4r7p3
sketchbook pro 7.
and photoshop cs6 might be moving onto cc later this year.
and sketch up (free)

not sure if I want a workstation or not.
thanks for any help

Hi

Do you think you might be able to build a new computer? If so, I can give you my specs that would work good for you. In any case a workstation gpu would be best according to your software list. There is a lot of hype surrounding the gaming graphics cards but as far as engineering, more thought and testing goes into the workstation graphics cards.

I just finished a custom build that is screaming fast and streamlined and it cost me about $1,100. If you build your own you will learn alot and always know whats “under the hood”.

@jeffmeckley

iam interested in your Computerspecs
maybe you can put it in here or PM
THX

I will post some stuff after work.

yea I can build one, and I have specked out motherboard, ram etc… I was wondering about if it would be cheaper to build or buy
I would appreciate your specs and recommendations

thank you :+1:

Warewolf: Was wondering if you could list your current computer specs. Sometimes you might get away with “Frankensteining”.

Hi

Werewolf: I think you have some pretty good stuff in your lineup.

A couple of thoughts;
Windows 7 (including pro) may be disappointing in a few years as Windows 8.x will be able to support the new hardware. Windows 7 has had a long life cycle and Pro does support 196GB of RAM. With that said, if you stick with Win 7 you may want to put as much RAM in your motherboard that it will support (which in the case of the ASUS X79 you can do an 8x8 for a max of 64GB).BUT it may be difficult to find that kind of RAM below $500.

I think with Zbrush the most important considerations are RAM and maybe hard drive size and speed (your ssd is good!). Zbrush currently does not support 6 core processors (somebody please correct me if I am wrong) so the Core i7-3930K may be overkill (for Zbrush, you may have other software that can take advantage of the 6 core). You can get an i5 quad core for way less money and still be doing REALLY well.

I think if you reconsider your motherboard, processor, RAM and OS you can save alot of money, still have a very efficient and fast machine and, especially with the motherboard, have some room for expansion.

Stick with the ASUS motherboard but take a look at the Z97 Pro or Z97 A. They both allow for 32GB of RAM, the pro has WiFi and a little more feature rich at a good price point.

So maybe something like this:
ASUS Z97 of some type
Intel Corei5 (I have the 4590 3.3GHz)
32GB of RAM
Windows 8.1 (the simple consumer release for $99)

The graphics card is about giving you some good resolution for your monitor (of course a few other things as well) If you are not a gamer do stick with a “workstation” rated card.

The rest of your list will work fine. Make sure the case is compatible with everything.

Most of what I am telling you is about saving some bucks but still getting a high performance machine with the software that your are using. There is alot that I am probably missing but this is my advice.

Also, if you haven’t already, check out this site:
pcpartpicker.com

This site is amazing. You can specify all the parts in your build and you will get some instant amazing feedback including compatability issues, comparative prices from top sellers such as micro center and newegg. All in one site. It will help tremendously.

If I think of anything else I will post again. I would like to post some picks of my build if I have time.

Thanks

ill check the site out and the motherboards as well. not sure about windows 8 though. never did like it when was testing them in the stores. maybe wait for 10.
thanks again for your insight.

just got back from the site. I love it man. saved about 600- 800 bucks
thanks a lot. wasn’t sure on how I able to build my new computer.
i registered and saved my list. I really like the checking if there’s any conflicts that helped out a lot.
I guess I have to go with windows 8.1 :frowning:
anyway thanks again

Werewolf: When you get it built let me know how it works.

If you can find a good computer parts store in your area you can cut the cost even more by avoiding shipping and most places should do price matching. I have a Micro Center in my area so was able to get in store only deals and price matching or out of box prices.

Hope it goes well.

JM

will do.

we have a Frys near me. however, they have been slowly going down hill and getting harder to find the stuff I need or want.

Hi Werewolf

Any progress with your build?

I had another thought concerning the i7 processor. Keyshot is a CPU based rendering program and with the Bridge to Keyshot offer it just may work in your favor if you do decide to go with the i7 as Keyshot will take advantage of all the power.

JM

I had to set that on the back burner for now. I had to pay taxes this year after buying a condo. so, right now a new computer is not in my sights. I keep looking on youtube on how to build a graphic workstation. not much there, a lot of building “awesome gaming computers.” but graphic workstations, not so much.

I also been looking at the Dell xps 8700, at my local costco store. which has i7 cpu, windows 7 pro
12 gbs of ram which can be upgraded to 32gbs.
and 4gb NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745
all for about $800.00

I also think that I will wait until windows 10 has been released and see the reviews on that.

again I thank you for showing that pc site
