Neub question: How do I remove Zspheres?

Hi. How do I remove Zspheres (Not even sure if I’m using the right term…) from my model?

With your ZSphere model in Edit mode and ‘Draw’ selected, you Alt+Click on the ZSphere you want to remove. If the ZSphere is in the middle of a chain then the others simply close up. Alt+Clicking on a Link-sphere will define a magnet (when there is only one ZSphere following the link) or break the mesh into separated portions.

In addition to what Marcus said, remember that adding or removing Zspheres will destroy any existing modeling you might have done while viewing the preview zsphere adaptive skin.

If you are going to pose the zsphere model remember to store a morph target while viewing the zspheres. This will keep your preview modeling intact.

Thanks! That helped a lot. New question, though: Is there any way to keep the look of the Zsphere’s arrangement when I turn on or activate Adaptive Skin? I’m trying to model a caterpillar woman-type thing, and applying the adaptive skin makes it look mishapen, if that makes sense.

Also, if you click onto the HELP tab in the upper right screen corner, then you will find a complete reference. Including little tuts etc.
Cheers
Lemo

The zspheres are only guidelines for how the adaptive skinning generates the preview geometry. Under Tool > Adaptive Skin you will find settings that change how the geometry is generated. You can change the settings further by using a Zplugin called XYZadjust which you can find >> here <<. The full thread can be reached >> here <<.

The Zbrush help button contains more info and zscript tutorials on ZSpheres. Look under Modeling 3D Objects > Adaptive Skinning.

Edit: You can also find information about each button, switch and slider in ZBrush by moving the cursor to that item and hold the CTRL key.

Well, that kind of helped in some places… I’ll post a screenshot of my creation and try and explain what I mean.

But in the menetime, how do I fix this? I went into prefrences, I’m just not sure where to go from there.

The MaxPolyPerMesh setting under Preferences is based on the amount of RAM in your system. You can increase that value but in order to keep ZBrush stable it is not recommended.

You should probably turn down the Tool > Adaptive Skin > Density value. When you have your desired Zsphere shape you can press Tool > Adaptive Skin > Make Adaptive Skin to create a new tool with a Density amount of subdivision levels. You can later on add more subdivision levels but this will again be dependant on the amount of RAM you have available.

Note: Make Adaptive Skin creates a polymesh tool which does not contain any of the features associated with Zspheres.

EDIT: Okay. I think I finally figured out how to do it.

…Oy, this is going to take a while.
