Need Advice on Creating Fish Fins, Scales etc.

  1. I need some advice on what would look good for creating the lines in the fish fins. Would you sculpt the lines or use an alpha etc. I’ve never done this before so please explain in detail if you could. Thanks.

  2. I want to create some scales on the fish. I downloaded a scale alpha and used the “Drag Rect” but it didn’t look good at all. Any ideas how to get scales to overlap so they look good.

  3. I used the “Move Elastic” brush to move the geometry down but it really messes up the poly’s. I read this brush was better than the “move” brush for retaining good poly flow. What is the best way to move the geometry down and keep the mesh “clean”?

Thanks

Hi

Personally haven’t tried making scales before but usually the best way forward would be with alphas, if you got some good ones, will save tons of time.

try using the roll layer brush with your selected alpha, if it leaves a harsh border then in the alpha tab you can adjust radial fade, which will blur the edges so will blend more.

You can also adjust all the alpha settings, contrast, repeat across horizontal or vertical axis, so can in a way increase the size of your alpha if you need.

Try giving it ago.

Hope it helps!

and just remembered, can even use drag rect, if you store morph targets as you go along, and use the morph brush to restore any thing gone wrong, and can store after each brush stroke/correction

Thanks for the idea jasoni, I will try that. If anyone can help with the question below I’d really appreciate it.

Hi, really need help with #3 if someone could. Much Appreciated!

Use the shadow box to make the fins. And placed in a different Subtool. Or simply use the tools to cut?

Thanks for the reply, had not thought of making the fins as separate objects instead of all together, but maybe that would better.

Have not used shadow box before so will give it a go! :+1:
