Napoleon Crossing the Alps

closer look

This is my interpretation of the painting done by French artist Jacques-Louis David between 1801 and 1805. This model has taken my computer to the limits. It had even crashed my computer to the point where I had to destructively reboot my computer to the factory state. I lost all of the model at that point except the head hat and scarf. Due to my hardware limitations I am unable to refine this model. just getting these renders at full resolution of the model was a sketchy expperience:) But here it is.

A little about the model:

100% zbrush, all pieces of the model where created from either zspheres, zbrush primatives, or extractions. I could of used another program but I just love creating in zbrush, it gives me the feel of just grabbing clay and sticking it to the sculpture.

The model was sculpted in the posed state. I usually sculpt from the T-Pose then pose the character; which is the way I did my previous model “The Three Graces” But I was just wanting an artistic experience with this peice so I sculpted it like you would a maquette.

I took liberties with my rendition of this peice. After all if we wanted an exact copy of the picture we could just look at the picture:) The face is actually from another painting by J.L. David. Which actuall gave me a wonderful profile. The original face seemed too timid and young For my taste so I went with the current head.

As always comments and Critiques are welcomed and appreciated, and thanks for taking interest in my work!

I don’t know enough about horse anatomy to know if you’ve done this work done correctly, but I know you’ve done an outstanding work on the Nepoleon. The folds and creases of the clothing and leather look correct to me. Are you planning on putting on another material on him? If your planning to use ZBrush as your final render you might consider doubling you screen resolution and using the AA button to make your jaggies disappear. I’m looking forward to any additional posts.

An outstanding piece of artwork man, great job. One thing that stood out to me is the sword might be intersecting with the cloth. This is a great outcome under the circumstanes I guess, thanks fro sharing.

I think it is absolutely amazing and deserving of top row when finished. For those unfamiliar with this painting… here’s the ref.

Horse body looks too short for me (compare with ref)…

already VERY nice!

I think his eyes look too soft… his expression is more stern in the painting… great job though

Thank you all for your comments!, I appreciate them all. I do love this community as well. Everyday I see people creating dreams, nightmares, famous people, loved ones; it is an amazing feeling to be apart of this growning artistic thirst. Thanks to all the innovated people at Pixologic a well for for giving the tool to creat our dreams.

To answer the questions, it is ruffly 15 million polys right now. This is mostly due to all the different pieces that made up the model. As for time, I actually started it a long time ago, but my computer crashed and I lost almost all of it. So I start up again in the last week of July with only the head, hat and scarf that I was able to save. I worked mostly weekends, but I do have to admit to alnighters during the week as well… every once in a while. Long story short, it is about 40-50 hrs. If there are ayother wuestions I am more than willing to answer.

WOW!
