Move tools

Hey I am absolute noob just started using zbrush yesterday so forgive me if this is a really dumb question but I cannot for the life of me seem to figure this out. Im used to C4D where you click on an object and move it.
I have created 3 tools - a sphere, a ring and a cube but I dont know how I move them. It always seems to only move the last one created. Ive looked at the subtools menu and it also only shows the last one. I read that you alt click on another object to select it but that doesnt seem to work. It just moves the gizmo. Is there an easy way to just select the tool and move it? the other two tools just sit there and i cant select them or move them. the camera also doesnt effect them. So confused.

Hello @platypuss

You can’t move the previous 2 tools because you dropped them to the 2.5D canvas. You have to “Append” (see image below) subtools to add more so that you can edit them independently. The sphere, ring and cube have to be separate subtools. How you would do it is first draw a sphere on the canvas and enable “Edit”. Move the sphere a bit so you will be able to see the next subtool coming in. Then in the Subtool palette, you would click “Append” and select a ring which will automatically place it on the canvas. Then click “Append” again and select the cube. Now you will have three separate subtools that can all be edited independently. Just select which subtool you want to work with in the Subtool palette.

Ah K got it. Thanks. Wow this beast is not very intuitive is it. So what is difference between append and insert?

Append will add a tool and place it at the bottom of the subtool list. Insert will add a tool below the selected subtool. This is to save you moving it if you want it in a particular order.

If you hold your cursor over a button or slider and hold down Ctrl, it will give you a description of what it does. This is true for most but not all of the interface items.

If you want to pick up ZBrush quickly, I would highly recommend that you watch the Michael Pavlovich video series Intro to ZBrush.

To add to @zber2’s answer, Append puts a new subtool at the end of the subtool list but keeps the currently selected subtool as the active subtool. To work on the appended subtool would require selecting it in a separate step.

Insert makes a new subtool immediately below the selected subtool and also immediately makes it the active (selected) subtool so you can work on it straight away. Often times this is more useful than Append. Of course, shifting to the end of the subtool stack would be a separate operation.

Without a doubt, check out the Intro videos by Michael Pavlovich that @zber2 linked.

Have fun.
