Meshy look : not getting smooth look

hi ,

I have created a model which unfortunately has 1.3 million poly .
Even after having these many poly when i render it in Maya and Zbrush it gives Mesh look , not the smooth look as it should give.
please suggest

Thanks

um got any examples?? are you using normal maps or displacement maps? and are you using the aproximation editor in maya?

Yeah, post a pic of what’s happening and maybe explain the steps. I had this happen in Max once, but the next time I opened it it was fine. You also might have your normals flipped… although you did said it happens in Zbrush too. So, I don’t know. A detailed description with a demonstrative pic or two would certainly help.

Im not that much into maya. But in 3DS you need to apply a turbosmooth or meshsmooth modifier to the mesh in order to look good. Its possible to not divide the mesh even further but smooth the polys out. Like “relax”. Search for something similar in maya.

Is The Mesh Made In Maya Then Imported Into Zbrush?? If It Is And Its Not Smooth In Zbrush Before Going Back To Maya It Could Be The Way Your Exporting It To Zbrush, I Know With 3d Max When You Export As An Obj You Have To Specify You Want Quads Not Triangles Etc, If You Dont Then You Get A Un-smooth Mesh Look.

The problem i think is it is not being smoothed in Maya. The aproximation editor does all of this. divides and smoothes the mesh a few times when you render it. But with out some more info i realy cant help.

im guessing you need to smooth out normals. go to polygon edit ( i think its in there ) and find something along the lines of hard faces/smooth faces, or smooth normals.

sometimes at export time, that information gets mis-interpreted by applications and isnt applied how you like.

and since your model had 1.3 mill polys,im guessing that 45 degree smoothing normal will be more than enough.

Like Martin said im sure that is problem in smooth normals option… when you import model from zbrush ( low poly ) you get hard edges poly normals… and when you aplly displacement look like you have wireframe over your model from low poly…
you need to select model and in polygons sub meny go to Normals/ Soft edge and when you render yout your model should be ok!

that thing bothered me for some time…

Also you can put one mesh smooth on object… and render like that… mesh smooth will do this for you!

even if you dont use displacement and want to render HY poly from zbrush of 1.3 M poly… you still need to do that!

Hope this helps!

Best regards

here are some samples :

Your mesh doesn’t have the same amount of polys than in zbrush…
Go in edit polygones, smooth.
It will add more poly on your meshand it will look smoother.

Also, you can smooth your polygones nomals on displayto avoid this squary looking:

Select your mesh, go in edit polygon, normals, soften arden, set it to 180, appply.

It will look smooth on surface.

hey there, like Sebcesoir said, in Maya 8.0 or above, you need to select your model and go to Normals -> Unlock Normals, and then Normals ->Soften Edge and you should get a smooth look.
hope this helps…
