Hi!

The problem is that Maya auto-averages the weights.

So when assigning weights, always start att the end of your joint hierarchy,
in this example the tip of the penguins wing. Paint the weights the way you want them. Then lock the weights for that joint.
Move on to the next joint, Paint weights, lock them, and so on.

Makes sense? Not sure. I´m too tired to make sense. Hope it will get you on the right track.

Locking waits and all that will work…mostly. You’ll also need to use the component editor in Maya to manually adjust weights to zero, as painting will not always apply a zero-value because of Mayas normalizing of values. I don’t suggest you turn the normalize option off, having worked with Lightwave prior to Maya, it sounded like the answer to my problems. It wasn’t, huge hassle. You might also want to reduce your number of influences when you smooth bind your mesh, default I think is 5, I use 3.

ok when you say lock the weights are you talkng about “toggle hold weights selection” ?..

i tried painting weights on another model and it came out fine. is it the topology?? not to sure on how to use componet editor and locking weights, and other ideas.

By locking wieghts I meant per joint in the paint weights window, toggle hold weights, sorry. Your topology matters for the deformation of the mesh after it decides where the joints influence the mesh. It assigns weight down joint chains, starting with the root. If it selects 5 joints to influence a single vertice when you bind, you could have joints across the body controlling a vert on the nose. I you paint one of the joints to zero/black it will redistribute that weight to the other four joints. When you paint, start with the root, paint and then lock it, move down the chain. Rinse and repeat. It’ll will still ‘think’ for you and redistribute weight, but the more you do the less it thinks. I think. I’m pulling out an old, unfinished rig to sort it out. I guess I’ll also verify all the above jibberish while I’m at it.0

thanks guys, gonna give it a shot later… been so fustrating. so why is it i dont get this issue in other model??
