Male Character Free Hand Sculpting No Textures, Alphas, or Stencils of any kind

Hey Everyone,

This sculpt is part of a full male character sculpt that I am trying to finish up. This is just the hand of the character I did it with no textures, Alphas, Stencils, or Alpha Masks of any kind. I literally just free hand sculpted with the standard brush and a smoothing here and there. You can probably tell just looking at it. It could probably be better but I need to move on to the feet, and I have some other work I have to attend to before I can do the feet. I will post up the final results when I finish the full sculpt. Comments and Crits are welcomed. I did create texture brushes to use for detailing the hands, but they did not end up working out for me. I just did not get near the detail that was in the image in the sculpt when I applied them. And some areas that should have had more depth did not pop up as much as other areas that had far less. Its true I could have pushed different values back in Gimp, I do know photoshop also but I am loving the 128 bit color GEGL in Gimp to where I loose no definition in between image operations on the high detailed images that I have created. The reason I did not just edit the images further is because I have a preference to sculpting in generally and just love the control I get over just hand sculpting in all of the detail. I am putting together a new computer so I should be able to hand a more detailed model in my next post. :) ;)

That’s a really nice looking hand dude. My only crit on the model itself would be the bulge of the edge of the hand that connects to the pinky. I’m thinking that you’ve had a reference pic where the hand has been pressed against a surface and squashed outwards to create that bulge.

But to be honest no, I can’t tell you haven’t used any alphas or such just by looking at it. And to be even more honest it looks just like you’ve used alphas. I don’t doubt that you haven’t, but yeah the result is the same but you probably spent alot more time on it for no real gain in my eyes.

Hey Salmon,

Thanks for the crit you are totally right I missed that. I am going to go back and fix it. :) ;) I was just referencing my hand but my hand does not bulge out that much. I just missed it for some reason. lol Thats why I love to have other people look at my work. Thanks again for taking the time to give me a crit. Its very helpful. There is a line running along the hand towards the wrist closer to the thumb that was an accidental stroke that kind of gives it away. Also with the thumb itself as far as the detailing of the skin on the top of the thumb at the bend the skin is too uniform and perfect in its bend definition which is not realistic. So I will probably need to tweak it. Yeah the hand sculpting of it took about 16 hours but I was not getting good results from the because of the low detail geometry. I tried it on some high detail geometry and the alphas look great. The index finger Alpha was about 2k resolution but when applied to the lower detailed geometry at Division level 6 on the model it looks terrible. If I could get the model up to about Divisioin 8 or higher then I could probably use them, but that would be around 100 million polys or more for the character. ;) :)

Beautiful work. I’m love anatomic reproduction of the hands. My absolute favorite. Am looking forward to your continued efforts.
