Learning Zbrush

Hey everyone, this is my first post here. I purchased zbrush last weekend and over the past week i have been visiting here and drooling over all the amazing stuff you guys create with zbrush. I am 21, and havent really done much modelling apart from a bit of 3dsmax while i was at university (unfortunately since i did a degree in Computer Science i didnt get to do much graphics work).

But over the past week i have been getting more and more enthusiatic about this and i really think I want to start a career in graphics, however obviously i have a years of practice to go through first!

Anyways I thought id post some of my best (i use the term timidly) works.
Criticism welcomed, but bear in mind im a noob!

Some basic playing around with DemoHead, some different brushes, and masking techniques

Anyway guys thanks for reading and i’d be very grateful for some responses, especially tips on how to improve!

Peace,
Matt

A nice begining to zbrush. All I can say matt is keep practicing with zbrush, keep visiting zcentral and you will improve without a doubt. Welcome to zbrush central.

Thanks for the reply digital dreamer. I looked up some of your work, impressive stuff!
yeah i am really enjoying using zbrush, it’s a lot more…well relaxed than using 3dsmax, i feel like i can sit back and actually enjoy the process more. Will definitely keep trying to improve my skills.

well heres my take on an orc style character, pretty human looking for an or i guess…but just practicing sculpting and texturing (even though i rushed the texturing with about 3 different grenish colours and the spray brush, i kind of like the style)

Wow he is Orc meets Hulk! I def. get the comic
style coming through-

You’re at the right place to be inspired and learn!
I guess if I had to pass on advice, the most important
thing I try to remember is to only to compare yourself
in progressive fashion, ie. learn, take note of what you
like and don’t tear yourself down. Your most important
job at this point is to keep motivated, to apply, apply,
apply - it will be hard at times but just push through.

With study and experience the skill you long for will
become reflex - it just takes time. Have fun and be
passionate. Do the best you can today and tomorrow
will take care of itself.

Enough philosophy - great work, keep it up!

Hehe thanks for the motivational speech super glitcher ;D but yeah i agree, when i first picked the software up it was kinda depressing comparing my first pieces with the standards on these boards, but its a very nice feeling to see yourself improve at something. So i can only hope to carry on improving and enjoying it as i go.

Hey so over the past week ive been practising a bit (not as much as i hoped, seems life has found a way of keeping me from the computer lately). decided i want to give a try at making a zealot model (starcraft 2) and i’m using the image below taken from blizzard.com as a reference.

So far i just did a quick sculpt of the head from a polysphere (seems so much easier to work with than sphere3d!). think i got most of the proportions right, just missing some detail and obviously the spines on the head need adding. definitely wanna go ahead and try making the body, but do you think i should make the whole body with a head over again (i.e from super average man in zbrush) instead of making a seperate body then attaching the head to it afterward?

So i came to the conclusion that if i want to do a full blown character project, i should really start with some anatomy basics. Searched for some references and gave it a try with a male body.

Could use some refinement i know, but i’m rally happy with how it turned out (and i had some fun with material properties at the end there). Next step is to learn how to attempt doing hands/feet, which i know are gonna be really difficult, since they were always one of the hardest things i found to draw.

Hey Matt, be sure to check out Scott Eaton’s Artist in Action. It’s all about human anatomy.
