Kurt Papstein -Z4r4 Beta

Hey everyone! You probably have already seen this stuff floating around, but I thought I would create a new thread dumping additional images.

Here is the first character done earlier on in the beta testing. Trying out the IMM Curve brush and covering a character up with lots of straps. Love this feature, and the ability to lay in multiple layers of bandages/leather/jewelry… you name it.

And this guy was an experiment with IMM Brushes. Lots of mechanical parts and tubes! Super fun. I sculpted the biosuit of the creature whole to begin with, then later Opened it up like a flower by converting the mesh back to Dynamesh and projecting the details I wanted. I also used QRemesher to clean up the Dynemesh model so it was easier to manage and lighter on the topology count. This came in handy later on when I was working the pose.

I had the great pleasure of presenting this character at Siggraph L.A. this year. Showing the process from concept to posing the maquette. For all of you that came out to say hi, thank you! And happy R4 Sculpting!

Wow.

I love you style Kurt.

I could look at your sculpts for hours.

You work just inspires me so much.

Well done. Great stuff.

I would love to have seen your creature concepting at Siggraph.

Very impressive creations.

Well done.

Dan.

Your designs are always such a treat sir! amazing work!

Is this one rendered in Zbrush? This looks more like a photo of a 3d printed model!
If rendered in Zbrush, can you tell me how to get such a nice depth of field?

Thanks!

impressive Kurt!
you took inspiration from evangelion?

laurie, deckard01, SammehSAMURAI - Thank you very much! Glad you like this thing

stefanobernardi - Thanks! It was rendered in ZBrush using the BPR filters. To get that intense depth of field I would turn on multiple Blur filters and have them work on top of eachother. Another way to do it would be to take the Depth render from the BPR, and use that in Photoshop as a new alpha channel. Run a Lens Blur Filter on it and select the Alpha from the Source drop down menu. Hope this helps!

Marco Tiny - You are absolutely right, I recently went and watched the series followed up with The End of Evangelion. Admiting that I just saw it for the first time. So sad haha. Anyways, it wasn’t a conscious effort, but that was a clear influence in the end.

Just stunning!!! While I wipe the drool from my chin, just let me just say it again… stunning!
One day… one day!

Awesome characters! Love the helmet thingy :sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Gorgeous work, just looking at your pipe work is a treat, lovely stuff.

:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:Kurt!!! I LOVE them very inspirational stuff bruh, designs are sick!

The alien gobo baby is so fun and cute and the white fleshy guy with the helmet is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. :sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:sunglasses:

Cheers,
Kevin

Great work as always. I really enjoy the shot of the creature with the head exposed showing the smaller creature inside. Nice organic/alien vibe, well done!

Great work Kurt! I look forward to more of your designs.

Man, I wish I could get renders like that out if ZBrush…I am having such a difficult time with just about all the render setting. Wax, AO, shadow color. The more I think I’m learning, the more I get lost and mess something up. Haven’t even begun to play/understand the SSS functions yet. If you don’t mind me asking, how much is BRP, Filters, and post work? Such a huge question, I know. Thanks in advance and thanks for sharing such awesome work.

~MAH~

Thanks Kurt! I’m a depth of field freak and use it a lot, but never managed to get such a convincing effect with BPR filters! Can you give me some advice on filter setting? I still haven’t understood the logic of the BPR filter to create a good DOF effect…

RawSunlight, Etcher, AdamRodgers Split-Mind - Thank you so much! Glad you like it

KCASS - Thanks so much! Those are big words, and coming from you that means a lot :] Miss you buddy

Bryan - Thanks! I’m glad you like those shots of it, they are my favorite too actually haha

MAH - Regarding the render settings in general, I always find less is more. If I were to crack open everything in this scene you would be surprised how limited the lighting is, and how I am only using a few filters on this guy.

stefanobernardi - Honestly, the depth filter is a little confusing to me as well. and very touchy it seems. The problems I run into is it works more like a halo effect of blurriness behind the model rather. So this is why for extreme situations like that I double up the blur filter haha. It’s just a matter of playing with it honestly. My starting point is to push the Depth to 1, then pick the depth point A and B. After that I just noodle with those sliders and the exponent for Depth.

I’ll make a note to myself to talk more on how I render things later :} Might make for a good tutorial or something

I loved the material you used during the demonstration. The resolution was not the best, but from what I could see, I read it as “AlienSkin”, right? I looked for it but I didn’t find it so I assume it’s made by you. Great work. Did you change the lighting too or is it baked in the material?

Hello great demo you did at siggraph . I am wondering what brush did u use on 4 minutes of your video before u used the curve modifiers? can other brushes use the curve modifiers? thanks
